In January this year, except some parts of UP, MP, Rajasthan, Bihar and Gujarat, the minimum temperature will be above normal in the remaining areas. However, cold wave will continue in the states of North India.

On the other hand, the past year 2024 was the hottest. The Meteorological Department (IMD) said that after 1901, 2024 has been the hottest year so far in the country. The heat was the highest recorded so far in the last three months of the year (October-December). The month of October 2024 was the hottest month in 123 years. The Meteorological Department started recording temperature records since 1901.

The average temperature increased by 0.54 °C in 2016 over the period 1991 to 2020. It increased by 0.65 degrees Celsius in 2024. That means a difference of 0.11 degrees was recorded in the temperatures of 2016 and 2024.

The country’s average annual temperature in 2024 was recorded at 25.75 degrees Celsius, which is 0.65 degrees Celsius more than normal (25.10 degrees). According to IMD, in 2024, the night temperature for four consecutive months in July, August, September and October was recorded as the highest in history while February was the second hottest month, due to which the annual night temperature for 2024 was the highest recorded.

The day temperature was also the fourth warmest recorded during the year, resulting in the highest average annual day temperature in history. IMD Director General Dr. Mrityunjay Mohapatra said that the average annual temperature is continuously increasing from 1901 to 2024, it has increased very fast in the last one and a half decade.

La Nina conditions formed, but will end in three months Finally, La Nina conditions have formed but it is so weak that it is likely to end within 3 months. According to IMD, it will not have much impact on the current winter season. Coldwave days in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, UP, Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh will be one to two days less than normal. The number of cold wave days may remain high in Gujarat and its adjoining states.
