Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei has surprised the whole world by suddenly choosing his son as his successor. Khamenei has handed over his throne to his son Mojtaba, but the question is arising why? Some reports are claiming that Khamenei is not well and is in a coma. Therefore, Khamenei’s son Mojtaba has been given the command of the Supreme Leader of Iran. Mojtaba can assume office as long as his father is alive. However, no official information has been given yet regarding Mojtaba being elected as the supreme leader. There is news in the international media that 85 year old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is ill. He is suffering from a serious illness. Therefore, he has chosen his successor while he is alive. Mojtaba is the second son of Ali Khamenei.
Who is Mojtaba?
Mojtaba Khamenei is the second and younger son of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He participated in the Iran-Iraq war from 1987 to 1988. Mojtaba was born in 1969 in Mashhad. He studied theology after graduation. After this, in 1999 he studied in Kom to become a Maulvi. Like his father, he is knowledgeable about Islamic matters. In 2009, he came into limelight for the first time due to his strict suppression of the ongoing protests in Iran. Many people were killed in this demonstration. Recently, according to media reports, Mojtaba Khamenei has been elected the next Supreme Leader of Iran. This news is much discussed and it can have far reaching effects.
How was Mojtaba elected?
Mojtaba’s election was done in a very secret manner, the report claims that 60 members of Iran’s Assembly of Experts had called a meeting on the demand of Ali Khamenei. In this meeting the members were not even aware of what the issue was. After reaching the meeting, the members were instructed to immediately decide on succession under confidentiality. The members were warned to keep the meeting confidential. That’s why this news could not come out till now.
