Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar was acquitted in September 2023 in a case related to the murder of 3 people.

Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court may decide against former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar. This case is related to the murder of a father and son during the anti-Sikh riots that took place in 1984 after the assassination of the then PM Indira Gandhi.

The incident occurred on 1 November 1984. Sardar Jaswant Singh and his son Tarun Deep Singh were murdered in Raj Nagar Part-1 of West Delhi. At around 4.30 pm, a mob of rioters attacked his house in the area.

It is alleged that Sajjan Kumar was leading the mob. Sajjan Kumar is also accused of assaulting the family of the deceased. A case was registered in this matter at Saraswati Vihar police station in Delhi.

A case was registered against Sajjan Kumar under sections 147, 149, 148, 302, 308, 323, 395, 397, 427, 436, 440 of the Indian Penal Code (now BNS) on charges of rioting, murder and dacoity.

In fact, on October 31, 1984, former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi was shot dead by her security personnel. Both of them were from Sikh community. After this, riots broke out in the country.

Sajjan Kumar was found guilty of killing five Sikhs in South Delhi’s Raj Nagar Part-1 and burning a Gurudwara in Raj Nagar Part-2.

The decision was postponed to 16 December 2024

In the hearing held on December 16, Rouse Avenue Court had postponed the verdict on Sajjan Kumar. The date of judgment was kept for January 8. After the hearing on January 8, the decision was postponed again. Both times, Sajjan Kumar, lodged in Tihar, appeared in the court of Special Judge Kaveri Baweja through video conference.

In December 2021, Sajjan Kumar had declared himself innocent in this case and said that he would face trial. Sajjan Kumar was found guilty in the trial. After this, orders were given to frame charges against him.

After the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984, there were riots in Sikh dominated areas. Thousands of people were killed in this.

3 people have been acquitted in the murder case

In July 2010, Karkardooma Court had framed charges against Sajjan Kumar, Brahmanand, Peru, Kushal Singh and Ved Prakash in the murder case of three people. Cham Kaur, an important CBI witness in the Sultanpuri riots, had alleged that Sajjan Kumar was instigating the mob.

After 13 years, on 20 September 2023, the Rouse Avenue Court acquitted Sajjan Kumar and other accused in this case.

What is anti sikh riot The anti-Sikh riots broke out in 1984 after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. To suppress Sikh terrorism in Punjab, Indira Gandhi had launched Operation Bluestar in the Golden Temple complex, the holy religious place of the Sikhs, in which many people including terrorist Bhindranwala were killed. Sikhs were angry with this incident.

A few days later, Indira Gandhi was shot dead by her own Sikh bodyguards. Since then, anti-Sikh riots started across the country, the maximum impact of which was seen in Delhi and Punjab. About three and a half thousand people died during the riots.
