Stampede due to rumor of fire in Pushpak Express, people pulled the chain, got hit by Karnataka Express: 12 killed, accident in Jalgaon, Maharashtra

A horrific train accident on Wednesday (22 January 2024) evening in Jalgaon district of Maharashtra shocked the entire country. 12 people died in this accident, while more than 40 people were seriously injured. The incident took place between Maheji and Pardhade railway stations near Pachora, when passengers of the Pushpak Express train going from Lucknow to Mumbai started jumping from the train in panic due to rumors of fire. Meanwhile, Karnataka Express coming from the other side crushed him.

Someone spread a rumor among the passengers that the train was on fire. Frightened by this, the passengers immediately pulled the alarm chain and stopped the train. Amidst the chaos, some passengers jumped from the train and tried to cross the tracks. At the same time, Karnataka Express going from Bengaluru to Delhi passed on the nearby track and 12 people died on the spot after being hit by it. Railway officials said that the cause of the accident could be sparks from the ‘hot axle’, which the passengers mistook for fire.

Nashik Divisional Commissioner Praveen Gedam said that 8 ambulances and railway rescue teams were sent to the spot. Railway officials, while confirming the chain pulling in Pushpak Express, said that this accident happened purely due to panic and rumour. Railway spokesperson Swapnil Neela said, “The reason for the accident was that passengers got nervous and came down on the tracks due to rumours. “We have started investigating the incident and the injured are being provided better medical care.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed condolences, terming this accident as unfortunate. He also spoke to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. He wrote on Twitter, “The train accident that happened in Jalgaon, Maharashtra is very sad. In this regard, he talked to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and got information about the accident. The local administration is providing all possible help to the injured. “I express my deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident and wish for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the state government is keeping a close eye on the situation. He tweeted, “The unfortunate incident that took place near Pachora in Jalgaon district is very heartbreaking. All possible medical assistance is being provided to the injured.” Chief Minister Fadnavis also announced assistance of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of the deceased.

At present, Jalgaon district administration immediately took action at the spot and started the rescue operation. The District Collector said that nearby hospitals have been put on alert and the seriously injured can be sent to Mumbai for better treatment.
