New Delhi:
Palestine expressed deep gratitude towards India on Tuesday. In fact, New Delhi has released the second tranche of financial assistance of $2.5 million to the UN agency. India gave this installment to the UN Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine refugees in the Near East. With this, New Delhi completed its committed annual contribution of $5 million for the year 2024-2025.
In a statement, the Palestinian Embassy said, “We express our gratitude and appreciation to the Government of India for releasing the second tranche of $2.5 million to UNRWA, completing its annual contribution of $5 million for the year .”
Praising India’s commitment to humanitarian assistance, the Embassy said, “We also acknowledge India’s commitment to provide humanitarian assistance and medicines to UNRWA, which will enable the Agency to fulfill its responsibilities towards the welfare of Palestine refugees. “Help will be available.”
Palestine Embassy Chargé d’affaires Abed Elrazegg Abu Jazar stressed the importance of the financial assistance, calling it “a testament to India’s unwavering support” for UNRWA, established in 1949.
“This financial contribution is an important step in countering Israel’s efforts to weaken UNRWA and curb its activities in the Palestinian territories,” he was quoted as saying in the statement.
Highlighting the strong historical ties between India and Palestine, Jajar said, “The Palestinian people greatly value India’s support. They look forward to continued political cooperation until their aspirations for freedom, independence and establishment of their own state are realised. And this support will continue at both physical levels.”
India’s representative office in Palestine on Monday announced the release of an installment of $2.5 million. Over the past few years, India has provided financial assistance of $40 million for UNRWA’s core programs and services, including education, healthcare, relief and social services for Palestine refugees.
New Delhi has long supported a two-state solution towards the establishment of a sovereign, independent and viable State of Palestine within secure and recognized borders.
