CM Mamata Banerjee, who was present at the gate of Raj Bhavan, answered questions to the Raj Bhavan officials for a long time.

At home tea ceremony was organized at Raj Bhavan, West Bengal on Republic Day. When Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached Raj Bhavan, she came to know that Kolkata Police Band was not given entry into Raj Bhavan to perform.

CM Mamta got angry on this. She said that if Kolkata Police Band is not given permission to enter and perform, then she will not go to Raj Bhavan.

Banerjee, who arrived at 4:29 pm for the traditional tea ceremony, was told that the police band that participates in the At Home ceremony held every year was waiting outside.

Mamta got angry at this and asked the officials present there why the band was kept out. It is his practice to perform at events.

After this Mamata Banerjee went to the gate of Raj Bhavan, where the band was standing and requested the officials to let them inside.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was seen talking to state Governor CV Anand Bose on Sunday.

When the band reached inside, Mamta asked to play a song.

Mamta looked very angry before the Raj Bhavan official called her. He was heard saying that Kolkata Police provides security, then why is the police band not being allowed inside? After the band was allowed inside, Banerjee requested them to play a song. During this time, Governor Anand Bose was also seen with him. Mamta also lodged an objection with the Governor regarding this.

Sources said that Chief Secretary Manoj Pant will write a letter to Raj Bhavan in protest. A senior Raj Bhavan official said that the band was given a separate space for the program. While in-charge OSD Sandeep Kumar Singh said, “When this was pointed out, the band was taken to the right place.”

He claimed that the Governor has ordered that any change in such ceremonies will require the approval of the Chief of Staff.

Controversy over the band has happened many times before

  • A similar controversy took place on 15 August 2021 when the Kolkata Police Band was not allowed to perform at the Raj Bhavan function. This was said to be the result of growing political differences between Mamata Banerjee and the then Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar. This incident further soured the relations between TMC and the Governor.
  • The Kolkata Police Band was also not included during the Republic Day celebrations on 26 January 2022. This decision had angered the state government. Then Mamata Banerjee termed it against the cultural traditions and administrative honor of the state.
  • Kolkata Police Band was not allowed to perform at the function organized at Raj Bhavan on the occasion of 15 August 2022. Instead, preference was given to the Indian Army Band. Mamata Banerjee called it an insult to the state government and said that it is against the federal structure. However, Raj Bhavan clarified it citing tradition and said that there was no political objective in it.
