Bangladesh’s interim government is trying to bring Hasina and others back from India: Home Advisor

New Delhi:

The interim government of Bangladesh is making every effort under the extradition treaty to bring back the deputed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and others from India. Home Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd) Mohammad Jahangir Alam Chaudhary gave this information on Wednesday. Hasina (77) has been living in India since August 5 last year, when she moved from Bangladesh to India amidst a large -scale protests led by the students. After these widespread performance, the 16 -year -old government of his party Awami League fell.

Bangladesh’s International Crime Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants for ‘Hasina and several former cabinet ministers, advisors and military and civilian officials for’ crime and massacre ‘against humanity.

The government news agency BSS quoted Chaudhary as saying, “We are trying to bring back those who are facing cases in ICT in charges of crime against humanity.”

He responded to a question on the steps taken by the government to arrest more than 100 accused, against whom the ICT has issued an arrest warrant. Last year, Bangladesh sent a diplomatic note to New Delhi demanding extradition of Hasina.

The home advisor said that they are arresting the people living in the country, while efforts are on to bring back other people living abroad. He said, “We are arresting people living in the country. The main person (Hasina) is not in the country. How will we arrest those who are abroad? ”He said that legal efforts are going on to bring them back.

When asked about the progress of issuing a red notice against Hasina, Police Chief Baharul Alam said that he hoped that Interpol will soon issue notice against the ICT against the wanted persons. He said, “Since a red notice has been issued by ICT, the host country is responsible for arresting them.”

The interim government has already canceled the passports of Hasina and 96 others in the case of forced disappearance and alleged involvement in the killings in July. In December, Bangladesh had officially demanded Hasina’s return to the country to prosecute allegations of mass murders during the anti-discrimination student movement called ‘July-August Rebellion’.

Bangladesh’s International Crime Tribunal has so far issued two arrest warrants. It was originally formed to prosecute people who were staunch colleagues in the atrocities of Pakistani soldiers during the 1971 liberation struggle. Hasina has been ordered to be arrested and produced in court by 12 February as she is also accused of forcibly disappearing people during the last 16 years of rule.

According to the news of the news agency, Information and Broadcasting Advisor Nahid Islam said that if Hasina was allowed to conduct political activities from there, India will be responsible for this.

He said, “We have asked India to send Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh, and this is a diplomatic issue. But if Sheikh Hasina tries to do politics from there, holds political meetings in India, then the Government of India will be responsible for it.

Meanwhile, the High Court on Wednesday acquitted all the 47 people convicted in the attack on the train carrying the then Leader of Opposition Hasina in Ishvardi on 23 September 1994.

A bench of Justice Muhammad Mehboob ul Islam and Muhammad Hamidur Rahman gave the verdict after hearing the appeals of the culprits. Describing the decision of the lower court as inhuman, the High Court ordered the immediate release of those acquitted. The lower court sentenced nine people to death, 25 people life imprisonment and 13 others to 10 years in jail.

When Hasina was traveling by train from Khulna to Syedpur, the train was attacked with indigenous bombs and bullets. The police filed a charge sheet against 52 workers of Bangladesh Nationalist Party on 4 April 1997.
