The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-Maras) announced to create a genome sequence of India, to create a genome sequence of breast cancer, to bridge the number of cancer patients in India and the deficiencies in the genome region. The institute on Monday released it as Bharat Cancer Genome Atlas (BCGA).
A recent report by the Indian Council of Medical Council of India (ICMR) indicated that the number of patients with this deadly disease is continuously increasing. The National Cancer Registry Program has stated that one in every nine person in India is at risk of getting cancer and 14,61,427 people have got the disease in the country. Every year the number of patients with this disease has increased by 12.8 percent since 2022.
Despite being a large number of cancer patients in the country, India is very less representing global cancer genome study.
In view of the lack of genomic structure of various types of cancer prevalent in India, IIT Madras launched the Cancer Genome program in the year 2020. Under this program, 960 entire exercise sequences have been completed from tissue of 480 breast cancer patients across the country.
IIT Madras has analyzed the data in collaboration with Mumbai’s Carkinos Healthcare, Chennai Breast Clinic and Cancer Research and Relief Trust in Chennai and have collected genetic variants from samples of Indian breast cancer patients. The institute has made this database public on BCGA dot IITM.com for India and foreign researchers and doctors.
Referring to the benefits of ‘Bharat Cancer Genome Atlas’ not only to India but also to researchers around the world, IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti said,’ IIT-M is another health related data in accordance with our social commitment to everyone. We hope that this will give deep information about the deadly disease and initial intervention will also help in its prevention. This Atlas will brid down genome shortcomings for various cancer in the country.
The research institute’s Center of Excellence on Cancer Genomics and Molakular Theraputics, for which the amount was given from the Government of India’s Institutes of Eminence initiative.
Describing this initiative in detail, IIT Madras Center of Excellence on Cancer Genomics and Molacular Theraputics chief and project coordinator S Mahalingam said, “This database will be a big resource for identification of cancer specific biomarkers in India, which causes a big resource, which causes breast cancer Will help to find out soon. In addition, it will prove useful in the identity of new drugs to develop specific treatment strategies for the people of the country. ‘
Apart from this, Professor Mahaling, Professor of the Department of Biotechnology of IIT Madras, said that the objective of BCGA is to collect data from researchers working on various types of cancer genomics, and is ready to accept the presentations.
The data will be used to detect high -risk groups, monitor cancer progress, create strategies for personal treatment and identify the biomarker to understand the results of treatment.
