The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government, headed by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, presented the budget for the financial year 2025-26 in the Assembly on Friday and allocated a good amount of funds for its major welfare schemes which includes rent-free bus travel scheme for women. There was a ruckus in the assembly when the main opposition party All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) extended the House after the state tried to raise the issue of alleged corruption in the ‘Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited’ (TASMAC). The Enforcement Directorate has also raided the case related to the state -owned company.
Free bus travel saving women
While presenting the budget, Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu said that the number of women using rent-free bus services has increased from 40 percent to 65 percent. He said, “On an average, 50 lakh women travel daily in buses run by state transport undertakings, which has made a total of 642 crore trips so far. It is worth noting that a study conducted by the State Planning Commission has shown that due to this initiative, women save Rs 888 per month.
A new airport will be built in Rameswaram
He said that for FY 2025-26, the government has allocated a subsidy of Rs 3,600 crore for this scheme in budget estimates. Thenarasu announced a new airport in Rameswaram and said that the work has been expedited to set up a new airport in Parandoor near Chennai. Also, he said that a city with world class facilities will be settled near the state capital.
