Hindu priest wrongly arrested in Bangladesh: Sheikh Hasina comes to the defense of Chinmay Das

New Delhi:

Since the change of government in Bangladesh, the Hindu community is being continuously targeted. Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was recently arrested in Bangladesh. Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina said that the Hindu priest has been wrongly arrested. He should be released immediately.

The Awami League president said, “A top leader of Sanatan Dharma has been wrongly arrested, he should be released immediately. A temple was burnt in Chittagong. Earlier, mosques, dargahs, churches, mosques of the Ahmadiyya community were burnt. Monasteries and houses were attacked, vandalized, looted and set on fire. Religious freedom and safety of life and property of people of all communities should be ensured.”

Chinmoy Krishna Das was detained by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 4:30 pm on Monday.

This arrest took place at a time when the interim government led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has been accused of atrocities on the Hindu community of Bangladesh.

On Tuesday, he was produced before Chittagong’s sixth metropolitan magistrate Qazi Shariful Islam amid tight security. His bail plea was rejected and he was sent to jail.

Taking aim at the caretaker government of Bangladesh, the former PM said, “The present ruling parties appear to be failing in all sectors. They have failed to control the prices of daily necessities, to protect the lives of the people. There is direct and indirect impact on the common people. I strongly condemn these indirect atrocities.”

Sheikh Hasina said, “A lawyer was murdered in Chittagong. Those involved in this crime should be caught and punished as soon as possible. This incident is a gross violation of human rights. A lawyer was performing his professional duties. He had gone to follow the law and those who beat him to death are ‘terrorists’ and should be punished.”

The former PM said, “If the Yunus government, which seized power unconstitutionally, fails to punish these terrorists, then it will also have to face punishment for human rights violations.”

The former PM said, “I appeal to the people of the country to unite against such terrorism and fundamentalism. It is important to ensure the safety of life and property of the common people.”

India’s Foreign Ministry has also expressed deep concern over the arrest and denial of bail to Chinmoy Das and has urged Bangladesh to ensure the safety of all minorities.

The Ministry of External Affairs said in the statement that it is unfortunate that the perpetrators of these incidents are still roaming freely, while charges are being leveled against a religious leader who presented legitimate demands through peaceful meetings.

The local people of Bangladesh have closed the Shibchar center of ISKCON. People of the Muslim community had come there to close this temple, during which many devotees were present there. Chinmoy Krishna Das had organized a rally in support of Hindus in Rangpur, Bangladesh on 22 November. It is believed that for this reason this action was taken against Chinmoy Krishna Prabhu.
