Amid questions being raised on the results of Maharashtra elections, a Congress delegation reached the Election Commission on Tuesday evening and met the Election Commissioners. During this, Congress leaders demanded concrete answers from the Commission on many issues including the huge increase in the final voting percentage after voting in the state elections. Congress urged the Commission to release detailed data to ensure transparency and remove mistrust.
A delegation of Congress leaders reached the Election Commission headquarters in Delhi on Tuesday evening and presented point-wise issues on behalf of the party. The delegation included Congress General Secretary Mukul Wasnik, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Nana Patole, senior leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Congress spokesperson Pawan Kheda, Praveen Chakraborty and some other leaders.
After meeting the Election Commission, Congress MP and advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “We had discussions in a very cordial, constructive and positive atmosphere. We told the Commission that the uneven level playing field directly affects the basic structure of the Indian Constitution.” And weakens that. Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, we raised four main issues before the Election Commission. We have questioned the claim of conducting door-to-door surveys which is mandatory before removal. We have asked for its booth-wise and constituency-wise raw data.
The Congress leader further said, the second issue we raised was the addition of names to the voter list. We reported that in this short period of five months, roughly 47 lakh voters have been connected. Now the Election Commission says it is 39 lakhs. This is no small number over a period of 4.5 months. We have also asked for raw data from the Commission regarding this. He has promised to respond in writing in the near future.
Singhvi said that the third issue has been a very important and troubling issue that has been repeated in state after state, but perhaps Maharashtra has illustrated it most clearly, which is the massive overestimation of the final voting percentage. Singhvi said that in Maharashtra the voting percentage was one thing at 5 pm on the polling day, it was something else at 11 o’clock and before the counting two days later it was something else. During this period, the voting percentage increased by about 7 percent, which is about 70 lakhs. This can change the entire game of elections. Abhishek Manu Singhvi finally said that apart from this we gave a sheet to the Election Commission which showed that surprisingly in 118 constituencies, out of which BJP won 102 constituencies, the number of votes per constituency was higher than in the Lok Sabha elections. Additional voting of 25,000 persons took place. The Election Commission has assured us of giving a point-wise clarification or rebuttal in writing in the near future. “We hope to get a response that will be transparent and remove mistrust,” Singhvi said.
