After being out of the field for a year, Mohammed Shami made a comeback to competitive cricket in the Ranji match against Madhya Pradesh. He took seven wickets in his very first match. Whereas after this he was a part of the Bengal team for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In the current season of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he bowled in seven matches and took 8 wickets. Looking at the fitness of Mohammed Shami, it was expected that he could soon fly to Australia.
But now the report of Cricbuzz has claimed that Mohammed Shami is unlikely to go to Australia soon. Indications are that he has not yet received fitness clearance and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is still unsure when he can be sent to Australia. According to the report, the real dilemma is whether to send them to Australia. Mohammed Shami is bowling, but his fitness is still under investigation.
The Sports Science Wing of BCCI’s Bengaluru-based Center of Excellence has not yet submitted a completely clear report to BCCI. An NCA team had gone to Rajkot where he was playing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) to monitor his progress. The people on Shami’s duty included a national selector (SS Das), the head of BCCI’s sports science wing (Nitin Patel) and a strength and conditioning trainer (Nishant Barduley). But more than his bowling, the board is considering whether he will be able to handle the Test match workload.
If reports are to be believed, Shami is unlikely to fly to Australia immediately, despite his absence being felt in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series. The experienced fast bowler may be there for the final Test in Sydney, the best case scenario would be his availability for the Boxing Day Test at the MCG starting on December 26. However, this is an overly optimistic expectation, and it would not be a surprise if he is not sent to Australia.
Bengal has reached the knockout stage of Bengal SMAT and will face Chandigarh in the pre-quarterfinals, which will be played on November 9 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Shami will remain with the Bengal team and is expected to participate in the knockout.
