Taking cognizance of the controversial speech given by Allahabad High Court Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav at a function of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), the Supreme Court on Tuesday sought detailed information from the court concerned. The apex court has directed the Allahabad High Court to submit a detailed account of Justice Yadav’s alleged speech.

Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav had said at a VHP event that the main objective of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is to promote social harmony, gender equality and secularism. He had said, “I have no hesitation in saying that this country will be run according to the wishes of the majority of people living in India. This is the law, the law definitely works according to the majority. Be it in the context of family or society. Justice Shekhar Yadav made this comment while addressing the conference of VHP’s provincial legal cell and High Court unit at the Allahabad High Court on December 8. Prashant Bhushan, in his letter, said that Justice Yadav, while giving a speech supporting the UCC, made controversial remarks which are considered to be targeting the Muslim community.
Earlier in September 2021, Justice Shekhar Yadav, while hearing a case on slaughter of cows, had said, “Cow should be declared the national animal and cow protection should be considered a fundamental right of Hindus, because when the culture and faith of the country is violated. If someone is hurt, the country becomes weak.” He had said that cow holds an important place in Indian culture.
