Former New Zealand cricketer Lou Vincent has said that he entered the world of fixing in India and was trapped. The former batsman told how he got into the world of match fixing while playing in the Indian Cricket League. He explained that being part of a gang at that time gave him a sense of belonging, as he was struggling with depression.
Vincent, 46, was banned for life 11 times by the ECB in 2014 for match-fixing, although the ban was amended last year to allow him to participate in domestic cricket.
Vincent started his career in the 2000s by scoring a century in his debut test against the strong Australian team. His international career ended prematurely at the age of 29 due to depression and involvement in match fixing.

Speaking of Vicente…
I did not have the mental capacity to become a professional player, so I went into depression at the age of 28. Then I went to India and there I was dragged into the world of fixing. I considered myself part of the gang.

Vincent’s highlights…
- I felt like I was part of a gang. That made me feel better, because I was thinking I was part of a match-fixing gang. I was with people who would support me and no one knew our secrets. I think most bike gangs work this way with young kids. Yes, they prepare the youth in such a way that we will take care of you. But, you take that car to the shop and break it down.’
- I’ve raised myself since I was 12, so I was always pretty flexible about the people around me. Because I wanted to find love, you are easily misled. It contributed greatly to my professional career by just sharing that desire to be liked, that desire to be loved.
Life time ban was imposed in 2014 ECB had imposed a life time ban on Vincent in 2014. In February the same year, Vincent had said that bookies approached him during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). However, at that time he did not accept match fixing. He was accused of match fixing in December 2013.
Once he said- ‘My name is Lou Vincent and I am a cheat’. Vincent further said that I misused my position and took money for match fixing.
