The night of 16 December 2012 is recorded as a black date in the history of Delhi, when 23-year-old Nirbhaya was brutally gang-raped in a moving bus. Nirbhaya and her friend were thrown on the road after being brutally assaulted. This brutality had shocked the entire country.
On the issue of women’s safety, Nirbhaya’s mother said on Monday that nothing has changed in 12 years. The government has changed, but the situation has not changed. Even today women are unsafe in the country. He said that whether it is Delhi or anywhere else, nothing has changed with women. Even today the same crimes are happening. We collect crime data year after year, but why don’t we collect how many people were punished and how many got justice in this year. If we talk about women’s safety and justice, we are still standing somewhere in 2012. The situation has become worse. Now it is not even clear whether anyone will get justice or not.
He said that crimes are committed, girls die. Our police cannot decide who has committed the crime. Recently, a female junior doctor was raped and murdered in Kolkata. There is a woman Chief Minister in West Bengal, but still a doctor could not save her daughter. Both the criminals were freed. His parents are scared. He was supposed to come here today, but could not come. Be it the central government or the state government, nothing will change until strict laws are implemented. He said that my request to the government is to work for the safety of girls. Bring a bill and make strict laws so that crime does not happen.
Nirbhaya’s father, in response to a question, said that the women’s safety campaign remained only in name. Governments certainly changed, but nothing changed regarding women’s safety. There was Congress government then. One lakh 74 thousand cases have been reported in one month, so how far will this data go in one year. He said that Arvind Kejriwal also used to say a lot that he will install CCTV and provide security. They did not install cameras. Those who have been wronged are still crying for justice. It is a matter of understanding who has been lacking and who has not.
He said that like other issues, women’s safety should be debated in Parliament. Strict laws should be made for the safety of women. The party and the opposition should together understand women’s issues and then make laws. Today criminals are sitting in the Parliament. They are in jail, they get a ticket and they win. Criminals should not be sent to Parliament. Women’s safety is most important. Nirbhaya’s lawyer Seema Kushwaha says that nothing has changed for women in 12 years. Even today, incidents continue to happen to women in different areas of the country.
