Who is Alka Lamba, who will challenge CM Atishi in Kalkaji, know why she left AAP

New Delhi:

Congress announced the name of its candidate for Kalkaji assembly seat in the assembly elections on Friday. Congress has given ticket to Alka Lamba from there. There he will face Delhi Chief Minister Atishi. Alka Lamba, a dynamic Congress leader who started politics as a student leader, is currently the head of the women’s wing of the Congress. Kalkaji assembly seat has become a high profile seat because of the Delhi Chief Minister contesting the elections. The entire country’s eyes are on this seat. BJP has not yet announced the name of its candidate from this seat. Let us know who Alka Lamba is and how has been her political journey.

Alka Lamba’s political career

Alka Lamba was born on 21 September 1975. Alka Lamba, who studied MSc-Med from Delhi University, started her political career as a student leader in 1994. She had joined the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress, during her student days. On its ticket, she was also elected President of the Delhi University Students Union in 1995. She has also been the national president of NSUI. Apart from this, she has also held various positions in Congress. She has been the former general secretary of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee. She is the former secretary of All India Congress Committee. To further strengthen Congress among women, Alka Lamba was made the President of All India Mahila Congress on January 5, 2024. She also runs an NGO by the name of ‘Go India Foundation’. Alka Lamba had contested the 2003 assembly elections against senior BJP leader Madan Lal Khurana. But she could not win.

After doing Congress politics for almost 20 years, Alka Lamba joined Aam Aadmi Party on 26 December 2013. This party came into existence in the same year. Aam Aadmi Party had given him the Chandni Chowk assembly seat ticket in the 2015 elections. In this election, he defeated BJP candidate Suman Kumar Gupta by a huge margin of about 19 thousand. In this election, Congress candidate Prahlad Singh Sahni got third place. Alka Lamba was the first woman MLA of Chandni Chowk.

Disillusionment with Aam Aadmi Party

Alka could not stay with you for very long. In September 2019, when AAP was bringing a proposal in the Assembly to withdraw ‘Bharat Ratna’ from Congress leader and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Lamba opposed it. After this he left Aam Aadmi Party. In the same month she again joined Congress. After this defection, he was disqualified from membership of the Delhi Assembly.

Congress gave ticket to Alka Lamba from Chandni Chowk in the 2020 elections. But Lamba had to face a heavy defeat. He got only three thousand 881 votes. She had lost badly at the hands of Prahlad Singh Sahni of Aam Aadmi Party. Sahni had got 50 thousand 891 votes. In this election, BJP’s Suman Kumar Gupta had to be satisfied with only 21 thousand 307 votes.
