India in alert mode regarding China’s virus HMPV, formed monitoring group

HMPV virus which increased panic

The Indian government has become alert about China’s dangerous virus Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). The Health Ministry has formed a monitoring group, which will monitor the cases of HMPV virus in China. This group will also keep an eye on whether there is any unusual increase in these cases. In fact, it is being claimed in the media report that an 8-month-old child has been found infected with HMPV virus in Bengaluru. This is the first case of HMPV virus in India. However, the incidence of HMPV virus in India has not been officially confirmed yet.

Delhi Health Department issued advisory

Delhi health officials on Sunday issued an advisory to ensure preparedness regarding possible health challenges related to ‘Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)’ and other respiratory infections. According to a statement, Director General (Health Services) Dr Vandana Bagga held a meeting with Chief District Medical Officers and State Program Officer of IDSP on Sunday to discuss preparedness to deal with respiratory diseases in Delhi. Under the recommendations, hospitals have been directed to immediately report cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) through the IHIP portal. It has been made mandatory to enforce strict quarantine rules and take appropriate precautions in respect of suspected cases.

India is keeping an eye on the situation in China

The Indian government had issued a statement a few days ago saying that the situation in China is being closely monitored. In view of the recent news of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China, India is closely monitoring the situation through all available means and has also requested WHO to share timely updates. The Health Ministry gave this information on Saturday.
The ministry said that as a precautionary measure, the number of laboratories testing HMPV cases will be increased and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will monitor HMPV trends throughout the year. The ministry said that a meeting of the Joint Monitoring Group (JMG) was held under the chairmanship of the Directorate General of Health Services here on Saturday to discuss the situation.
