Madanmohan Malviya, Bhopal. Union Carbide factory in Bhopal, which was closed for 40 years, had 337 tonnes of poisonous waste reaching Ramki Company of Pithampur in 12 containers. There the company is going to burn it in a special incinerator at a high temperature of 1200 to 1500 degrees Celsius. This entire work will be done under the supervision of scientists of the Central Pollution Control Board.
The decision as to when the garbage will be burnt will be taken only after a few days. On the orders of the High Court, the Gas Relief and Rehabilitation Department has sent the waste to the company and presented an affidavit on Friday. Now on January 6, the government will present its case in the High Court.
(Local people had protested in Pithampur against burning of garbage.)
Incinerator is built under hazardous waste management
- Environmentalist Dr. Subhash Chandra Pandey said that the incinerator installed in Ramki Company is made under the Hazardous Waste Management Rules 2016. Only hazardous chemical wastes are burnt in it.
- Such waste gets completely incinerated in it. In this incinerator it will be burnt at a temperature of at least 1200 degrees Celsius or more. At this temperature, no matter how much toxic waste is there, it will completely turn into ashes when burnt.
- While burning, the waste will not have any contact with air, soil or water. Pandey says that in such a situation this method is safe in every way for garbage disposal. This will pose no threat to humans or the environment.

Poison is tested before burning
Director of Gas Relief and Rehabilitation Department, Swatantra Kumar Singh said that before burning the waste in the incinerator, there will be a trial run. The capacity of the incinerator is to burn 270 kg of garbage per hour. Before burning, it will be burnt at the rate of 90 kg, 180 kg and 270 kg per hour. The waste will be burnt in the quantity which is found to be safest in the investigation. This may take three to nine months.
