Mainly the pilgrimage priests had to organize the events, so special attention was kept on them. Many restrictions were imposed in the name of security. For example, in an order related to the Kumbh, the pilgrim priests (Pandas) were asked not to allow any traveler who had not stayed with them to stay in their tents before.
Affidavits in this regard were taken from Kalpavasis and Pandas. Actually, the British wanted minimum number of people to come to the fair. When Adi Guru Shankaracharya started popularizing Kumbh in the sixth century BC, no one could understand that such a continuous, eternal journey was starting which would not be limited in time.
After this, centuries passed and the glory of Kumbh increased. However, with the East India Company establishing its roots in India, the British understood that Kumbh could become a means of increasing income. After this, the company officials and Christian missionaries were given the responsibility of studying the ‘Great Indian Fair’.
The East India Company started earning income by collecting taxes from the people who came to do business in Kumbh.
British government started tax collection in Magh Mela In 1796, Major General Thomas Hardwicke prepared the first report on the Haridwar Kumbh. The British government started collecting taxes in Magh Mela under the Regulating Act of 1810. Pilgrims, saints and pilgrim priests also opposed this, but the British did not agree.
AR Reid, Secretary of the North Western Province, prepared the details of the Prayag Kumbh Mela held in 1882. According to this, Rs 20,228 were spent in the fair, while Rs 49,840 were earned as revenue. meet. The income came from taxes collected from barbers, gardeners, sailors, Kanat vendors, hawkers and bullock-cart drivers who come to the fair.
The British were afraid of starting a rebellion due to the gathering of people during the Kumbh Mela.
When the income from Kumbh increased, the British deployed officers in the fair. Seeing the earnings, the British officers strengthened their hold on the fair to increase revenue and promote the British Raj. Some part of the earnings started being spent on the fair. The British took over the command of organizing the Kumbh in 1870. This was the first ‘official Kumbh’. After 1870, Kumbh took place in Prayag during the British rule in 1882, 1894, 1906, 1918 and 1930.
From 1894, the responsibility of Kumbh started being given to the District Magistrate. To ensure better conduct of the fair, the British government deployed three special officers from England.
