Tamim Iqbal: Selectors hopeful of comeback in Champions Trophy
Bangladesh Selectors Are Waiting For Tamim Iqbal Decision: The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will start from February 19, hosted by Pakistan, in which the top-8 teams are participating. Till now, only the England team has been announced for the Champions Trophy, in which everyone is waiting for the announcement of the other teams. ICC has fixed January 12 as the last date for squad announcement for all participating countries. Meanwhile, a big news is also coming out from Bangladesh Cricket Board, in which their most experienced opening batsman Tamim Iqbal may see the return to international cricket. Before announcing the squad for Champions Trophy 2025, the chief selector of Bangladesh cricket team has talked to Tamim about his return.
Now the selectors are eagerly waiting for Tamim’s decision.
Tamim Iqbal is counted among the best left-handed batsmen of world cricket, in which he has given match-winning performances for Bangladesh team with his batting many times. Although Tamim played an ODI match at home against New Zealand in the month of September 2023, after which he has not played any international match till now. Bangladesh team’s performance has been better in T20 International, but lack of experience in ODI is clearly visible. According to the news of ESPN Cricinfo, Bangladesh team’s chief selector Ghazi Ashraf Hossain went to the hotel of Fortune Barisal team and talked to Tamim about his return in the ongoing season of Bangladesh Premier League.
In his statement regarding the conversation with Tamim, the BCB Chief Selector said that we have to announce the team for the Champions Trophy by January 12, before which we still have a few days’ time and thus we have given time to Tamim also so that They should not take any decision in haste. We came here to talk to Tamim on behalf of the board.
After taking the decision of retirement, he took it back the very next day.
In the month of July 2023, Tamim Iqbal suddenly announced his retirement from international cricket, but the very next day he withdrew his decision. Tamim had also left the captaincy of Bangladesh team during this period. Although after that he played 2 ODI series matches against New Zealand in the month of September this year, but Tamim was not selected in the Bangladesh team announced for the 2023 ODI World Cup. Now, before the Champions Trophy 2025, the chief selector of Bangladesh Cricket Board also said in his statement that the team’s current ODI captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto is also in favor of Tamim’s return to the team. Bangladesh team has to play its first match in the upcoming Champions Trophy against India on 20th February.
