Actor Manoj Bajpayee has reached Goa these days to participate in the International Film Festival of India (IFFI). Here Manoj Bajpayee has shared his acting journey. He has also given career advice to newcomer actors. Speaking to PTI on Thursday, Manoj Bajpayee said that an actor should be like a ‘fly on the wall’ so that he can get inspiration to make the characters of the films more realistic. The meaning of the idiom ‘a fly on the wall’ is to be secretly present at a place and watch and listen to things closely.
Actor Bajpayee, who is popular for his powerful performances in films like ‘Satya’, ‘Shool’, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ and ‘Gali Guliyan’, said that he has always tried to stay connected with the people and even today he is not limited to posting selfies. Instead they prefer to go to the market and buy vegetables. “I feel selfies violate my privacy, these days even my wife is not that close to me,” the actor said during a masterclass at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Panaji. Frankly, if I keep my car windows closed, how will I be able to be close to people? How will I understand what they are going through? How will I understand those characters?
If I get cut off from people, I will go back.
He said, ‘The more I get separated from people, the more I will lag behind in the journey. An actor like me cannot stay away from people. National Award winner Bajpayee (55) said that in his 30-year long career, he never ran after ‘stardom’. He said, ‘There is mystery and glamor in stardom. I was just chasing good characters. I don’t want to be seen in public because I want to be busy looking at people walking on the streets, people standing near bus stops or people selling something.’ Bajpayee said, ‘An artiste should be like a fly sitting on the wall. She stays in the room, but people don’t know that she is in the room. If you learn this art in real life, things become easier. You can see things which are unseen.’
Showed his acting skills in many films
The actor described the character he played in ‘Gali Guliyan’, released in 2017, as the most difficult character of his career so far. He said that he feels happy in doing justice to the characters, who are completely different from his real personality. Bajpayee said, ‘If you do not go among the people, you cannot do this. I would love to travel in metro or local train and see people enjoying life even in difficult circumstances. If I don’t go among people like the characters I am going to play on screen and don’t experience their lives, it will be clearly visible in my acting. Bajpayee’s film ‘Dispatch’ was screened at IFFI on Thursday night. Directed by Kanu Bahl, this film is a ‘crime drama’, in which Bajpayee will be seen in the role of an investigative journalist. ‘Dispatch’ will be released on OTT platform ‘Zee5’ on December 13.
