Abu Azmi is a resident of Azamgarh in UP. He is a SP MLA in Maharashtra.
After praising the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb, Maharashtra SP MLA Abu Azmi has been suspended for the entire budget session. Maharashtra’s budget session began on March 3 and will end on 26 March.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandrakant Patil, while presenting a proposal in the House, said that the remarks made by Azmi had hurt the House’s reputation, due to which his membership was proposed to be suspended for the budget session. The proposal was passed by the Speaker in the House.
On the last day of the UP budget session, CM Yogi mentioned Abu Azmi’s statement in the Legislative Council. Yogi said- The member who glorifies the faith of India should be thrown out of the SP. Call him (Abu Azmi) here. Uttar Pradesh does not delay in treating such people.

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Aurangzeb had a fight for power and property, not religious. If someone says that this fight was with Hindus and Muslims, then I do not believe it.
March 4, 2025: My words were distorted, I withdraw the statement After the controversy over the statement, Azmi said- my words are shown by distorting. But still I have been hurt by my words, so I withdraw my words, my statement. I have said what historians and writers have written. I have not made any derogatory remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji Maharaj or any other great man.
Abu Azmi had said when the dispute escalated- do not give it Hindu-Muslim angle
BJP-Shiv Sena MLAs demonstrated in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly two days ago against Azmi’s statement.
As the dispute escalated, Abu Azmi had said- Aurangzeb also destroyed mosques along with temples. If he had been against Hindus, 34% Hindus would not have been with him. During his reign, India was called a golden bird. It should not be seen from Hindu-Muslim angle.
The SP MLA had further said- Aurangzeb ruled 52 years and if he had really converted Hindus into Muslims, then imagine how many Hindus would have changed. When Mangal Pandey started the fight in the 1857 rebellion, it was first supported by Muslim Bahadur Shah Zafar.
At the same time, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde had opposed the statement and said that Abu Azmi should be tried for treason.
Who is Abu Azmi Abu Azmi is a resident of Azamgarh in UP. He is an SP MLA in Maharashtra. In the last election, Abu Azmi won the Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar seat in Maharashtra. In 1995, the SP won 2 seats by Abu Azmi’s leadership. In 2004, Abu Azmi contested the assembly elections for the first time but suffered defeat. Abu, who was a Rajya Sabha member from SP from 2002 to 2008, contested the Lok Sabha elections in 2009 and lost to Gurudas Kamat of the Congress Party. Between 2009 and 2024, Abu Mankhurd has won 3 times from Shivaji Nagar.
