On the occasion of Republic Day in Amritsar, Punjab on Sunday, a youth tried to break the statue of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. The young man climbed the ladder installed to garland the statue. He started hitting the statue with a hammer, due to which the statue broke. 24

People caught hold of the young man and beat him up and informed the police. The incident took place on Heritage Street, about 150 meters from the police station. Angered by the incident, people closed Hallgate Chowk and started protesting.
AIG Jagjit Singh said that the accused has been caught and a case has been registered against him. He will be interrogated as to why he tried to break the statue.
On the other hand, Pawan Dravid, Chairman of Maha Snan Management Committee located at Shri Ram, has called for Amritsar bandh today. He said that there is anger in the entire Dalit community due to the incident.

People tried to stop the young man. When people asked him to get down, he had an argument with them. At last the young man threw down the hammer and started coming down the stairs. Heritage Street security was already standing on the platform below the statue. They pulled the young man down the stairs. The young man also tried to free himself from the security.
Then suddenly a third person came and slapped the young man. The young man tells them not to kill him. People tell him that let’s take you to the police station. A crowd gathers there. Both the people take the young man away from there.
An attempt was made to damage the Constitution book near the statue.
