These farmers have been booked under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (assault on government servant), 341 (wrongful restraint), 186 (obstructing government work), 149 (unlawful assembly) and National Highway Act of the Indian Penal Code. Charges have been leveled under 8-B.

A Special Investigation Team of Punjab Police was formed to investigate this case. This SIT is being headed by SP (Investigation) of Firozpur. A total of 26 people were identified during the investigation, out of which one of the accused, Major Singh, has died. Now a total of 25 farmers have been made accused in this case.

The court found that the accused did not appear despite summons and warrants being issued several times. After this, the court issued arrest warrant against all the accused and directed the SHO of Kulgarhi Police Station, Firozpur to arrest the accused and present them in the court by January 22. Kamaljeet Singh, one of the main accused farmers in this case, had filed a petition for anticipatory bail, which was rejected by the court. The court said in its order that this type of lapse in the security of the Prime Minister is a very serious matter and no laxity can be done in it.

This incident is not just a case of a security lapse, but it could also have put the Prime Minister’s life in danger. After the incident, political allegations and counter-allegations started between the state and central governments. The opposition had termed it as negligence of the Punjab government, while the Punjab government had said that this demonstration was part of the farmers’ movement. Meanwhile, the SIT investigation found that the protesters had planned and blocked the flyover, making it difficult for the Prime Minister’s convoy to pass through.
