Assam coal mine accident – 11 arrests so far: Process to seal all rat hole mines of Dima Hasao started; 5 workers missing even after 13 days

It has been 13 days since the Umrangso coal mine accident in Dima Hasao district of Assam. On January 6, 9 workers were trapped due to water filling in the mine. Till now the bodies of 4 laborers have been recovered. Whereas no trace of 5 laborers could be found.

Major action was taken by the Assam government against rat hole mines. So far 11 people have been arrested. Assam’s Dima Hasao SP Mayank Kumar Jha told Dainik Bhaskar that the process of sealing all rat hole mines has been started.

The Assam government on Thursday had announced to get the Umrangso coal mine accident investigated by a judicial and special investigation team. The government will give a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of all the victims. Besides, a decision was also taken to close all 220 such mines.

Names of 5 workers trapped in Umrangso coal mine

  • Zakir Hussain, 4 No. Sialmari Khuti, Dist: Darrang, Assam
  • Sarpa Barman, Khalisanimari, Gossaigaon, District: Kokrajhar, Assam
  • Mustafa Sheikh, Bagribari, Dalgaon, Dist: Darrang, Assam
  • Sanjit Sarkar, Raichenga, District: Jalpaiguri, West Bengal

Judicial committee will give investigation report to the government in 3 months Himanta Sarma Cabinet has also approved a judicial inquiry into the mine accident. An inquiry committee will be formed for this. Which will be led by retired Justice Anima Hazarika. This committee will submit its report to the government within three months. This team will also monitor the work of SIT. It was discussed in the cabinet that satellite mapping technology would be used to determine the timing of opening of mines in the same area.

500 GPM machine could not start State Mines and Minerals Minister Kaushik Rai had said on January 12 that the 500 GPM machine brought from Nagpur was assembled but could not be started. According to Coal India, if the machine had started working, 500 gallons of water would have flowed out in a minute and the workers could have been traced.

2 arrested in mine accident, FIR against 2 Assam Police had arrested Hanan Laskar and Punush Nunisa in connection with the mine accident. At the same time, Kom Kemprai and Pitush Langthasa of Congress’s Dima Hasao unit have lodged an FIR against North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member (CEM) Debolal Gorlosa and his wife Kanika Hojai. In this, a demand has been made for the immediate arrest of Gorlosa and Hojai. It is claimed that both of them were carrying out illegal mining in the mine.
