Assam mine accident, second body found on sixth day: 7 workers still trapped in 300 feet deep mine; Water level reduced by 6 meters, rescue continues

Lijan Magar’s body was found on the sixth day of the accident. All these workers had entered the coal mine on 6 January.

The body of another laborer, Lijan Magar, was found floating on water in a 300 feet deep coal mine in Dima Hasao district of Assam on Saturday. The laborer has been identified as Lijan Magar, 27, a resident of Kalamati village number 1 in Dima Hasao. Earlier, the body of a laborer, Ganga Bahadur Shreth, resident of Nepal, was found on Wednesday.

The NDRF team had gone to check the water level on Saturday morning when they saw the crocodile’s carcass floating. He was taken out around 7:30 in the morning. The water level in the mine has decreased by 6 meters. Water was removed from 5 pumps overnight.

Here, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma says that this was not an illegal mine, but was closed 12 years ago. Till three years ago it was under Assam Mineral Development Corporation. On January 6, workers entered the mine for the first time.

This 3 kg mine built in Umrangso was filled with water on January 6. Due to which the rat hole miners working there got trapped. The rescue operation for the remaining 7 laborers is still going on.

2 arrests in mine accident

Assam Police has detained a person for questioning in connection with the mine accident. Its name is Hanan Laskar. Hanan was made manager by the mine owner. He also looked after the payment of the labourers. Hanan had fled immediately after the incident. Hanan was arrested after a search operation on Thursday night. In this case, the police had earlier arrested Punush Nunisa in this case.

Currently 12 pumps are pumping out water, but the level has not reduced

NDRF Deputy Commander NK Tiwari had said on Friday that first the entire water will be taken out and only then the divers will go inside. Currently, two heavy pumps are working 24 hours to take out the water filled in the tunnel. 10 pumps have also been procured from five nearby mines and installed. A vertical search has been conducted so far, but nothing has been found. Along with removing water from the mine, further search is going on.

15 rat hole miners were killed in 2018 also

A similar accident took place in East Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya in 2018. Where 15 laborers were trapped and died in the coal mine. On December 13, 20 miners had entered a 370 feet deep mine, out of which 5 workers had come out before filling with water. 15 laborers could not be saved.

After a few seconds, water came from inside the tunnel so fast that I came out of the tunnel with pressure and fell on the bottom of the mine.
