baby john movie review: Once upon a time, remakes of South films were considered a superhit formula in Hindi cinema, but in the last few years this gap has completely disappeared. South cinema has become the choice of Hindi audience. In such a situation, when South director Atlee announces the Hindi remake of 2016 film Theri, which is also available on YouTube, with Bollywood’s Varun Dhawan, his decision comes under question. Although the makers had claimed that it would simply be influenced by Theri, Atlee, who was the director of the original, did not take the responsibility of direction. To add newness to the film, Kalis was given the reins of direction. But while watching the film, you realize that the film has become a frame to frame copy. Not only the story of the film but also its treatment is completely outdated and beyond logic. Makers need to understand that shooting action sequences with style and swag does not make a film a mass entertainer. Overall, Baby John is a huge disappointment.
same old story
The story of the film is about Baby John (Varun Dhawan), who runs a bakery somewhere in South India and is living a happy life with his daughter Khushi (Zara). While all this is going on, suddenly Baby John’s six-year-old past comes to the fore. When he was the DCP of Mumbai and his name was Satya Verma. Who maintains law and order in the entire city with very cool vibes. Then what happened. Baby John, who has left his police job, is living a false identity. What happened in his past. Will his past dominate his present. This is the story of the film.
Advantages and disadvantages of the film
Talking about the story, we have seen such stories in many films from South to Hindi. This old story has been made into a cumbersome screenplay. There are flaws in the screenplay. Atlee had claimed in the Mumbai press conference that the film was influenced by Theri, but if you have seen the original. The film which is available on YouTube is a frame to frame copy. The story unfolds in the same manner from the time the daughter reaches school late till finally the villain Nanaji and all his goons are brought to justice after the daughter is kidnapped. To bring newness, the writing team of the film has simply added the issue of trafficking of girls to the story. Nanaji’s son Ashwin is killed by drowning in water in the original film. In Baby John, he is killed by burning and in the name of Alag, the climax scene in the original has been shot in a closed mill, whereas in this film in the cargo ship yard. It has happened. There is no need to explain anything in the screenplay. Vamika Gabbi’s character is that of a police officer. He’s the one behind Baby John. Who had sent him? Did the people associated with Nanaji already know that Satya Verma was alive but how? The makers have left all this for the audience to understand on their own. This twist was not there in the original, so no work has been done on the twist in the remake. The film is on trafficking of girls. It has simply been added to the screenplay. In the beginning, the way trafficking of girls was shown out of meat. It was thought that some special research on this issue would be seen in the story but the message has to be added to the film, hence just this aspect has been added. If we talk about the songs and music of the film, it also has an outdated treatment. There is a song for every situation, which further increases the length of the film. While the dialogues of the film are fine, the editing of the film makes it even weaker.
Weak screenplay also weakened the actors
Talking about acting, Varun Dhawan has been seen in this kind of action for the first time. His hard work is visible, but nothing effective has been created on screen, due to which his swag and stylish style do not leave much impact. The film stars Keerthy Suresh and Vamika Gabbi, but both the actresses had nothing special to do in the film. However, both the actresses have done justice to their respective roles. Zara, seen in the role of Khushi, is very cute, but The makers needed to work a little more on his Hindi diction. Jackie Shroff’s character is in the typical caricature villain type. His character has not been developed properly in the film. Actor Rajpal Yadav is seen in a different style in some scenes. He definitely impresses. Salman Khan is seen in a cameo role in his familiar style. The rest of the actors are fine.
