India has lost 3 important series under the coaching of Gautam Gambhir.
If Team India cannot win the Champions Trophy, then coach Gautam Gambhir can be removed. Gambhir is being criticized after losing the Test series against New Zealand at home and the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. His future was also discussed in the BCCI review meeting.
According to PTI report, the decision about Gambhir’s coaching career now completely depends on the result of the next ICC tournament. Not only this, if the team cannot win the Champions Trophy, then the careers of senior players captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli can also be ruined.
India lost 3 series under Gambhir’s coaching. Gautam Gambhir took over the post of head coach of Team India in August last year itself. Under his coaching, the team could win only 2 T-20 series and one Test series from Bangladesh. During this period, India had to lose the ODI series in Sri Lanka along with the Test series against New Zealand and Australia.
According to reports, Gambhir wants to end the superstar culture from the team. Senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also looked out of form under his coaching. After which the speculations about both of them taking retirement also intensified. It is believed that after losing the series 1-3 in Australia, there was an argument between the senior players and Gambhir on some issues.
Gambhir’s career may end before the contract A senior BCCI source told PTI, ‘If Team India cannot perform well in the Champions Trophy, then the coach’s career may also end. His contract is till the 2027 World Cup, but if he does not get better results, he will be released before the contract.
Getting results in sports is very important and Gambhir has not given very good results in his short coaching career. BCCI also held a review meeting after the team’s performance in Australia. In which it came to light that the opinions of Gambhir and senior players were diverging.
Gambhir wants to end superstar culture BCCI source said, ‘Gambhir is focusing on ending the superstar culture of Team India. He also took strict steps to end it, which the senior players did not like.
When Gambhir was the captain of the Delhi Ranji Trophy team, the team had to play its home match at the Roshan-Ara ground. This ground was located in North-West of Delhi, where the pitches were helpful for fast bowlers. Then the senior Indian player of the team said that the team should play on the grounds of Jamia Millia Islamia. Because the big player’s house was near Jamia Maidan. Gambhir did not accept his wish and now he wants to end this culture in Team India also.
Gambhir was not happy with the demands of star players According to PTI, during the Australia tour, some star players had given their choice for hotel and practice timing. Which Gambhir did not like. On the other hand, issues of communication gap between senior players and Gambhir also came to light.
Selection committee is also angry with Gambhir According to the report, some members of the National Selection Committee are also angry with Gambhir. They do not want Gambhir to dominate the team selection. A former selector has even said that Gambhir’s approach is similar to that of former coach Greg Chappell.
Chappell became the coach of Team India in 2005. The senior players also did not like his coaching style, after which the players started hearing about the rift between the coaches. When Chappell left, Indian cricket was on the back foot.
Gambhir’s assistant was present with the selection committee The BCCI official said, the board is also angry with the fact that Gambhir’s personal assistant was present with the selection committee in Australia. Wherever the selectors were going, Gambhir’s PA was roaming with them. Due to which the selectors were not able to discuss openly. Why was the personal assistant being made to stay in the hotel along with the team members?
Gautam Gambhir’s manager Gaurav Arora (left) was seen hanging out with the selectors during the Australia tour. Action can also be taken against them.
Champions Trophy from 19th February One thing is clear from the BCCI official’s point of view that the board is not very impressed with Gambhir and his methods. The Champions Trophy will start from 19 February and continue till 9 March. After this, the team will directly go to England in June to play a 5-Test series. That means, if Gambhir is removed after the Champions Trophy, the board will have about 3 months to choose a new coach.
