The Uttarakhand government on Wednesday fixed the rules for marriage registration under the Uniform Civil Code. According to the state government, this Act applies to the entire territory of the state of Uttarakhand and will also apply to residents of the state living outside Uttarakhand.
Under the new rules, marriage can be solemnized only between those parties, none of whom has a living spouse. Both must be mentally capable to give legal consent, the man must be at least 21 years of age and the woman must be 18 years of age, and they must not be in a prohibited relationship.
It is mandatory for marriages taking place after the implementation of the Act to be registered within 60 days.
