The Supreme Court on Friday reprimanded the Assam government. The bench of Justice AS Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan said, “The government should do some better work instead of running after people in the matters related to beef.”

The bench also prohibited taking action against the accused in the case related to beef transport. The bench said that hearing of the case is necessary. With this, the bench postponed the hearing till 16 April.

The Assam government said that the Assam Police had stopped a car -laden vehicle. When the driver asked for information about the meat, he could not give the correct information. The meat was then sent to a forensic lab.

The bench said how a person would know that it is beef or there is some meat by looking at the packet. It cannot be different from the eyes. On this, the counsel for the accused said that the accused is the owner of a warehouse. He was taking the packed raw meat.

During the hearing, the bench said that the provision of Section 8 of the Assam Cattle Protection Act can be implemented only when the accused knows that the meat being sold is beef. Section 8 of the Act prohibits selling beef without permission of the officer.
