Mohammad Abrar Khan, Bhopal. There is an atmosphere of confusion in the capital of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal, after the stay order imposed on the notification declaring the properties belonging to the former princely state as government under the Enemy Property Act ended.
It is being said that with this order the government will take possession of those properties spread over about 150 acres, on which currently a population of about four-five lakhs is settled. On one hand, there is an atmosphere of fear among the people, while on the other hand, the history of Bhopal and the Nawab family is being discussed across the country.
get to know the nawab family
- Nawab Hamidullah Khan- the last ruler of Bhopal, lived from 1926 to his death in 1960.
- They had three daughters: Abida Sultan, Sajida Sultan and Rabia Sultan.
- According to tradition, the Nawab was to be succeeded by his elder daughter Abida Sultan, but in 1950 she went to Pakistan with her son.
- After this, the Government of India notified his second daughter Sajida Sultan as Nawab.
- Sajida was married to Nawab Iftekhar Ali Khan of Pataudi princely state of Haryana.
- After the death of Sajida Sultan, her son Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi was accepted as the Nawab of Bhopal.
- After him, Saif Ali Khan has got the title of Nawab and according to tradition, he is the heir to this property.
- Rabia Sultan, the third daughter of Nawab Hamidullah Khan, got married in Hyderabad.
- His descendants also have a claim on this property. Its dispute is also going on in the court, in which Saif Ali Khan is a party.

Abida Sultan’s property does not survive which is considered enemy property.
Meanwhile, experts in the history and law of the princely state of Bhopal say that because of Abida Sultan’s departure to Pakistan, the properties of the princely state are being called enemy property, none of his personal property is left in Bhopal. She had sold them before going to Pakistan.
Noor-us-Saba Palace and grandmother’s mansion were received as gifts
- Rizwanuddin Ansari, an expert on Nawabi history, says that Abida Sultan had some properties in her name like Noor-us-Saba Palace and Nani Ki Haveli, which she received as a gift. She had sold most of these properties before going to Pakistan.
- Qasr-e-Sultani, the palace of Nawab Hamidullah Khan, has also already been sold. Today’s Saifiya College is in this building. After the sale of this palace, the Nawab family started living in the Flag Stop House located in Kohefiza.
- As death tax of the Income Tax Department, the Nawab had given a large land of Kohefija area to the government, on which today BDA Colony is built. Similarly, he had donated a large part of his property to his subordinates and close ones while he was still alive.
- Ansari says that at present there is a legal battle going on between the descendants of Nawab Hamidullah Khan’s two younger daughters – Sajida Sultan and Rabia Sultan over the inheritance of the property.
- The government will now have to decide what exactly is the property of Abida Sultan who has settled in Pakistan. Bhopal Collector Kaushalendra Vikram Singh says that he has not yet received a copy of the High Court order.

The government is already in possession of the major assets of the state.
Senior advocate and convenor of Bhopal History Forum Shahnawaz Khan says that after independence, the Nawab has given many of his private buildings to the government for use. This includes Bhopal’s Collector Office, Sadar Manzil, four bungalows, Police Headquarters, Lal Parade Ground.
A population of lakhs is settled on the lands which belonged to the Nawab family in the areas from Kohefiza to Khanugaon, Chiklod and Berasia. Nothing is clear in this matter till the government’s clarification comes. This has created a new basis for a long legal battle.
The administration’s survey also continued to increase confusion
According to the central notification of 1962, the Nawab’s second daughter Sajida Sultan had become the heir. In such a situation, the Enemy Property Act does not apply to their property. For this reason, the number of enemy assets has been increasing and decreasing in each survey.
After the 2013 survey, the district administration had stated the number of enemy and evacuee properties belonging to the Nawab family to be 24. In 2015 their number was reduced to only 16. At the same time, only one property, Nani Ki Haveli, registered in the name of Abida Sultan, who settled in Pakistan in 2016, could be identified.
