An FIR has been registered against 18 policemen, including an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and four police inspectors, on an order of a court in Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh. The case pertains to the kidnapping of dismissed head constable Anil Singh who had allegedly exposed corruption within the Chandauli police department. This FIR was registered at Nandganj police station on Wednesday.

According to official sources, dismissed head constable Anil Singh, resident of Shiv Shankar Colony, Bhullanpur, Varanasi, had filed a criminal complaint under section 156(3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in 2022. Singh’s allegation was that senior police officers including Chandauli Superintendent of Police and other policemen of Chandauli Kotwali are extorting Rs 12.5 lakh from the public every month and they distribute this amount among themselves. The claim was investigated by Deputy Inspector General of Police (Vigilance) Luv Kumar in which the allegations were found to be true.

Angered by this revelation, the then Superintendent of Police of Chandauli dismissed Anil Singh on 28 February 2021. Singh also claimed that many people who exposed corruption have been murdered. Singh, in his complaint dated September 5, 2021, also alleged that a group of police officers including the then Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar and ‘SWAT’ team inspector Rajeev Kumar Singh, surveillance in-charge inspector Ajit Kumar Singh, station house officer (SHO) Satyendra Vikram Singh Kidnapped him from his in-laws’ house in Badhra, Ghazipur.

It is alleged that these officers had reached there in plain clothes in a car without number plate with the intention of killing him. However, Singh’s daughter Khushboo Singh somehow contacted the police and informed the SHO of Nandganj police station, which saved his life. Singh claims that after being illegally detained for two days, he was implicated in a fake case and a fake case was registered at Baburi police station in Chandauli on September 7, 2021.

Singh filed an application under Section 156(3) of CrPC before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Ghazipur and after considering the evidence, the court issued an order to register an FIR against these accused policemen on September 21, 2024. The court also ordered a proper investigation into the matter.

Two months after the court order, on 27 November 2024, sections 147 (rioting), 219 (disobedience to law by government servant), 220 (wrongful detention), 364 (kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code at Nandganj police station in Ghazipur. , 389 (extortion), 467 (fraud), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), An FIR was registered under sections 471 (use of fake documents) and 120B (criminal conspiracy).

Inspector Rajiv Kumar Singh, Inspector Ajit Kumar Singh, IPS officer Amit Kumar and other policemen posted in Chandauli and other districts have been named in this FIR.
