Severe cold continues in most parts of North India including Delhi-NCR. The melting cold has arrived. The temperature has gone below zero in many areas of Jammu and Kashmir. The surface of Dal Lake is frozen due to extreme cold. The Meteorological Department has predicted rain and snowfall in Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh during the next three days. There is a possibility of rain in the plains of north-west India also.

Meteorological department has warned of rain
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, there is a western disturbance in the form of a cyclonic circulation over eastern Afghanistan. Apart from this, another fresh western disturbance is causing cyclonic circulation of winds in and around Iraq. Due to this, there is a strong possibility of rain and snowfall in the western Himalayan region till January 3 and heavy rain and snowfall from January 4 to 6. Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh may also experience heavy rain and snowfall on January 5. There is a possibility of light rainfall in the plains of North-West India during January 4 to 6. IMD forecasts that the minimum temperature in north-west India may increase by 3-5 degrees Celsius during the next 5 days. Minimum temperatures are likely to increase by 2-4 degrees Celsius over East India and Maharashtra during the next 3 days.
People are taking help of bonfire in Delhi
Due to intense cold, people of the capital were seen taking recourse to bonfires. Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has set up 235 pagoda tents to provide shelter to homeless people. Night shelters have been built in many areas of the national capital including AIIMS, Lodhi Road and Nizamuddin Flyover. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature recorded in Delhi on Wednesday was 15 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was 7.4 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature was four degrees below normal, while the minimum temperature remained within normal limits. The maximum temperature in Safdarjung was 15 degrees Celsius, which is 4.3 degrees below normal. Palam weather station recorded the maximum temperature at 12.8 degrees Celsius, which is 2 degrees below normal.
Cold day warning in Uttar Pradesh
There is a possibility of cold day conditions in some areas of Uttar Pradesh on January 2. Due to drop in temperature in Ayodhya, a blanket of fog covered the city. According to IMD, the temperature was recorded at 9 degrees Celsius in Meerut and 10 degrees Celsius in Lucknow. There is a possibility of cold conditions in some areas of Madhya Pradesh on January 2.
Severe cold in Rajasthan
Cold has increased in Rajasthan also, due to which life has been badly affected. The temperature in Jaipur was recorded at 7.2 degrees Celsius at 8:30 am on Wednesday, while according to IMD, the temperatures in Bikaner and Churu were recorded at 7 degrees Celsius and 6 degrees Celsius respectively.
Temperature below zero in Jammu and Kashmir
Cold wave continues in Jammu and Kashmir and the temperature has gone below zero in many areas. The surface of Dal Lake has frozen due to cold. According to IMD, at 8:30 am on Wednesday, -1.5 degree Celsius was recorded in Srinagar, -2.4 degree Celsius in Gulmarg, -6 degree Celsius in Pahalgam, 0.4 degree Celsius in Banihal and 0.4 degree Celsius in Kupwara.
Temperature expected to drop in Prayagraj just before Kumbh Mela
The Meteorological Department has said that the temperature in Prayagraj is likely to go below normal after January 9, before the start of the Kumbh Mela. IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra said that the department will provide special weather updates for the Kumbh Mela. This fair will be organized from January 14 to February 26. Mahapatra said, “We are collecting detailed information and working closely with the state government for accurate forecast. “A dedicated webpage is also being developed for weather updates of Kumbh Mela.” Mohapatra said that the minimum temperature in Prayagraj is likely to be above normal till January 9, but after that the minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to be below normal.
