Border gave the trophy to Australia, did not call Gavaskar: When Little Master got angry, Cricket Australia accepted the mistake

Former Australia captain Allan Border presented the trophy to current captain Pat Cummins.

There has been a controversy over former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar not being invited in the prize distribution of BGT. However, Cricket Australia has accepted its mistake in allowing the controversy to escalate.

The host board said in a statement issued on Sunday – ‘Gavaskar knew that if the Indian team had won the Sydney Test and retained the trophy, he would have presented the award to Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah. We believe that it would have been better if both Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar were on the stage.

Sunil Gavaskar, popularly known as Little Master, had expressed his displeasure over the matter. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) is being played since 1996. The current series was in the name of Australia. The Kangaroos won it 3-1.

Gavaskar was not called After Australia won the Sydney Test, Allan Border was called for prize distribution. He gave the trophy to the Australian team that won the series. Whereas, Sunil Gavaskar was in the distance of 100 meters, but he was not called for the event.

Australia won the Sydney Test by 6 wickets and won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1.

Sunil Gavaskar told Code Sports…

I would have been happy to go to the award distribution ceremony. After all this is the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Which is connected to Australia and India. I was on the field itself. I don’t care that the trophy was being given to Australia. They played better cricket and won. Ok. Just because I am an Indian. I would have been delighted to present the trophy alongside my good friend Alan Border.

The name was kept after Border-Gavaskar only. This trophy was named after two legendary batsmen of Australia and India (Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar). Because when the name of the series was changed in 1996, the names of Allan Border from Australia and Sunil Gavaskar from India were found to be the most powerful. Among the approximately 2 thousand players who played Test at that time, both of them were the batsmen who had more than 10 thousand Test runs in their name. For this reason the India-Australia Test series was named Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The Border–Gavaskar Trophy is named after Australia’s Allan Border (left) and India’s Sunil Gavaskar (right).

Who won the first BGT? BGT started in 1996. For the first time, only one test match under this trophy was held in Delhi. India won by 7 wickets under the captaincy of Sachin Tendulkar. India’s wicketkeeper batsman Nayan Mongia, who scored 152 runs, was the player of the match. Since then, 17 BGTs have been played between the two teams. 10 were won by India and 6 were won by Australia. In 2003–04, a series was also drawn 1–1.

9 BGTs were played in India, in which India won 8 times. Australia won once. BGT was organized in Australia 8 times. Australia won 5 times in this. India won twice and the series was drawn once.
