Expansion of cancer treatment facilities in the state.

HighLights

  1. Cancer treatment facilities will be started in Rewa and Satna.
  2. The cost of super specialty hospital in Rewa is Rs 215 crore.
  3. Radiation oncology unit will be started in Satna.

State Bureau, Naiduniya. Bhopal. There are preparations to start big facilities for cancer diagnosis and treatment in the hospitals affiliated to Rewa and Satna Medical Colleges. According to the proposal prepared by the Health Department, a super specialty hospital will be built under the Medical College in Rewa at a cost of Rs 215 crore.

Facilities for medical oncology (cancer treatment through chemotherapy), surgical oncology (surgery) and radiation oncology (training) will be started here. Similarly, a radiation oncology unit will be started in the hospital affiliated to Satna Medical College at a cost of Rs 32 crore.

With this, cancer patients from Satna and surrounding districts will not have to go elsewhere for radiotherapy. Their proposal will be brought in the cabinet soon.

Deputy Chief Minister and Rewa MLA Rajendra Shukla, who is handling the Public Health and Medical Education Department, had held a meeting with the officials to start these facilities at both the places. Currently, people of this area have to go to Nagpur or Mumbai for good cancer treatment.

However the distance between Rewa and Satna is only 60 km. Amidst these, experts do not consider the plan of two advanced treatment centers appropriate. Any one center can be made in another part of the state.

Let us tell you that there is a State Cancer Institute in Jabalpur with the help of the Central Government and a Cancer Tertiary Care Center in Gwalior, but due to lack of adequate facilities at both the places, patients are facing problems. Similarly, the cancer hospital of MGM Medical College, Indore does not have all the advanced treatment facilities.

These are the problems in the hospitals of Gwalior and Jabalpur. Cancer tertiary unit is being set up in Jayarogya Hospital of Gwalior. The building is ready but tenders for purchase of linear accelerator, PET-CT machine and CT simulator machine have not been made. Rs 35 crores are to be spent for this.

In the cancer department here, 7000 to 8000 cancer patients from different districts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh come for treatment. Similarly, the foundation stone of State Cancer Institute (SCI) in Jabalpur was laid in the year 2015 and it started seven years later in the year 2022.

Currently, there are only two cancer surgeons, five specialist doctors and more than 12 staff nurses in this state level institute. The work is carried out with the help of PG students. In the Cancer Hospital of Rewa, these facilities will be proposed under Medical Oncology, OPD, Chemotherapy, Hematology i.e. treatment of blood cancer.

There will be facilities for surgery and irrigation for all types of cancer. PET-CT scan, MRI, CT scan, mammography machines will be installed for testing. There will be only radiation facility in Satna.

There should be state-of-the-art facilities for cancer treatment in every area of the state. The need is greatest in Bhopal. Here a large number of gas victims are also cancer patients but there is no separate government hospital.

There is a need to further strengthen the cancer hospitals operating in Gwalior and Jabalpur. It should be kept in mind that there should not be two big hospitals for the same disease in the surrounding districts. – Dr. Pankaj Shukla, former director, National Health Mission
