Chai seller spread rumor of fire in Pushpak Express: People were standing on the track after getting off the train, crushed by another train; 13 died

The incident occurred at 4:42 pm between Maheji and Pardhade near Pachora station in Jalgaon.

On January 22, in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, 23 passengers of the Pushpak Express going from Lucknow to Mumbai were crushed by the Karnataka Express coming on the other track. So far 13 people have died in the accident, while 10 injured are undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital in Jalgaon.

People present in the train during the incident told that the rumor about the fire was first spread by a tea seller. Which was heard by Udhal Kumar and Vijay Kumar traveling in the general compartment. Both of them got scared and jumped from the moving train. After this someone pulled the chain and some other passengers also jumped from the train to save their lives.

There was an atmosphere of chaos in the train after the rumour. People were trying to get out of the train to save their lives. Some people jumped on the track while some people jumped from another door where there was no track. According to the eyewitness, if other people had run towards the track, the accident could have been worse.

Jalgaon Collectorate said that 10 out of 13 people who lost their lives in the accident have been identified. 3 are being identified. After being hit by the Karnataka Express, the bodies of many people were divided into pieces. The rescue team and nearby people collected these pieces in sheets. The accident took place on January 22 at 4:42 pm near Pachora station.

Railway Board formed investigating team The Railway Board has constituted a team of 5 senior railway officials on Thursday to investigate the accident. It is likely to be commanded by a Principal Chief Safety Officer (PCSO). All the officers of the team are from Central Railway Zone. The team has also started investigation. Earlier, the Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police were investigating the accident. However, orders for investigation by the Commissioner of Railway Security (CRS) have not been issued yet.

Assistance of Rs 1.5-1.5 lakh to the families of the deceased

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also announced to give Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the killed passengers. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has announced a compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh each to the families of the deceased, Rs 50 thousand each to the seriously injured and Rs 5 thousand to those with minor injuries.

Official sources of Bhusaval division of Central Railway said that there was a sharp turn at the place where the incident took place. Because of this, the passengers sitting on the other track did not realize the arrival of the train.

Among the dead, 4 were from Nepal, 2 were identified through Aadhar card.

Two dead bodies were identified through their Aadhaar cards. Of the 8 identified dead, four are from Nepal. Lachchiram Pasi’s nephew Ramrang Pasi said that parts of his uncle’s hands and legs were missing. According to Ramrang, he recognized Lachchiram by his face and clothes, but the scene (mutilated remains) was so scary that his mind became numb for a moment.

Jalgaon Civil Hospital Dean Dr. Girish Thakur said that postmortem of 6 bodies has been completed, while 6 bodies have been sent to the anatomy department. After this the embalming process of the dead bodies will take place. Embalming is a process in which chemicals are used to prevent the body from decomposing.

The bodies will be handed over to the police after the legal process and identification is completed. After this the police will hand over all the bodies to their families.

Eyewitness said – people ran away shouting fire and became victims of the accident.

Sabir, who drives a taxi in Mumbai, and Rajeev Sharma from Lucknow told that we were in the sleeper coach of Pushpak. When the train stopped, we got out. Some people were running and shouting, ‘Fire has started, get out.’ There was chaos in our compartment also. Women and children all got down and started running. My friend also fell and got injured. Meanwhile, a train came from the front and passed by crushing the people.

Rajiv told that I shouted after seeing the train coming from the front, but no one heard. After the accident, there was only blood and dead bodies lying there.

Smoke came out from the wheels of the train when brakes were applied

Train number 12627 Karnataka Express was going from Bengaluru to New Delhi. While Pushpak Express (12533) was going from Lucknow to Mumbai. A senior railway official said that according to preliminary information, sparks arose inside a coach of Pushpak Express due to ‘hot axle’ or ‘brake-binding (jamming)’ and some passengers got scared. They pulled the chain and some of them jumped down.
