D Gukesh, who became the world champion in chess at the age of 18, said that today the Gukesh of his childhood would have been very happy. He said, at the age of 7, I had dreamed of becoming a world champion, today when my dream came true, I could not stop my emotions from flowing.

Gukesh said, I was thinking of a draw in the 14th game, but then Ding Liren made a blunder. As soon as I discovered the blunder, I understood that this was my best chance of winning. His blunder became the best moment of my life.

After becoming world champion, Gukesh attended the press conference.

Know what Gukesh said…

Question: You reached the winning position from a draw position, tell about that feeling?

Gukesh: When he did the elephant move, I was about to do my normal move. Then I realized that Liren had made a blunder, his elephant had come in front of my elephant. Liren’s blunder was the best moment of my life, because I knew from here the match was in my hands.

Gukesh came into winning position after Liren (right)’s blunder. Liren resigned and Gukesh became world champion.

Question: How does it feel to defeat the defending champion after playing 14 games?

Gukesh: We all know what Ding Liren is, he is the best player in history. The tough competition he gave me after so much pressure shows his capability. Liren has been struggling a bit in the last two years, yet he played like a true champion.

Ever since I started playing chess at the age of 6-7, I was dreaming of becoming a champion. Every professional chess player dreams of becoming world champion, but very few are able to accomplish it. I thank God for the entire journey. I also thank all the people who support me.

Question: You won Candidates and Olympiad gold this year. After Vishwanathan Anand, you are the first player to take the championship title to India. How important is this for your country?

Gukesh: It is a matter of pride to represent the country in any tournament. When I was watching the World Championship final in 2013, I had imagined how different it would be to sit in that place. Then Magnus won, then I decided that I will take this title to India once again. This was the biggest dream of my life for the last 10 years. Today I completed it.

Gukesh said, I had thought in 2013 itself that one day I will take the title of Chess Championship to India.

Question: Tell us about the feeling of becoming the Youngest World Champion?

Gukesh: It would have been a big thing for 8 year old Gukesh to become the youngest champion, but now I don’t think about all these records. A clip of mine from 2017 goes viral, in which I said that I want to become the youngest champion. I have fulfilled my dream, but still I feel that Gukesh of that time would have been more happy with this record.

Question: What was the best part for you in the journey to the Chase finals?

Gukesh: When I entered the room for Game 1, I lost the game, but for me sitting in that room was like a dream come true. Because in 2013, when the finals of Anand sir and Magnus were going on, I was not even allowed to enter the audience. That’s when I thought that it was very important to sit on that chair with the Indian flag.

Gukesh said, entering the room for Game-1 in the Chess Championship final was the best part of my journey.

Question: After becoming the champion, tears started flowing from your eyes, how did you handle your emotions?

Gukesh: I wasn’t sure that I would win, so I became very emotional. I was thinking about playing the game for as long as possible. I was thinking only about the draw, I had prepared myself for the tie-breaker. Then Liren made a blunder and I came into the winning position. The moment happened so fast that I could not control my emotions.

Question: What advice would you like to give to young Gukesh? What did you talk to your mother after becoming champion?

Gukesh: I wouldn’t want to change anything about my career. Didn’t talk much to mother, both of us were crying on the phone.

After becoming the world champion, Liren became emotional while sitting on the chair, tears started flowing from his eyes.

Question: How did the sacrifices of your parents inspire you to play chess?

Gukesh: Both my parents are sports lovers, they have dreamed of becoming a chess champion more than me. Thank you is too small a word to describe his contribution. Both of them were the biggest support in my career. After leaving from here, I will be able to talk to them openly.
