Champions Trophy: Australia’s big blow before the start of the Champions Trophy, ‘captain’ injured, out of the entire tournament

Mitchell Marsh out from Champions Trophy: Australia has suffered a major setback before the start of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Australian veteran Mitchell Marsh is out of the Champions Trophy due to a back injury and is unlikely to play again this season. In such a situation, it is also suspected of playing for Australia but also for the IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants.

Mitchell Marsh has faced a difficult season. He was out in the last match of the five -match series between India and Australia. Bu Webster was included in his place. During the series against India, there were constant questions about his fitness. He scored 73 runs in seven innings and contributed very little with the ball.

Mitchell Marsh played the only BBL match on 7 January after the Test series against India but then took rest from the last three matches of the BBL season to be mentally and physically refreshed before the Champions Trophy. But the problem of his back remains serious and the selectors have dropped him out of the tournament.

Cricket Australia has said about Mitchell Marsh’s injury that his “lower back pain”, but apart from this the board has not given any other information. According to Cricket Australia’s statement, “Michelle Marsh has been dropped from the upcoming ICC Men Champion Trophy due to lower back pain.” “The National Selection Panel and Australian men’s medical team dropped Marsh out of the tournament due to the injury, which could not recover completely during the rehab.”

The statement further stated, “In recent weeks, his lower back pain increased, due to which NSP had to take a long -term decision to complete the long term of Marsh’s rehab. Marsh now plan to return to the game. Under this, additional comfort and rehab will have to be held.

Being out of Mitchell Marsh has brought additional pressure on the ODI team. Mitchell Marsh leads the Australian T20 team and he also handles the captaincy of the ODI team when Pat Cummins is out. With this, the team will be forced to change their top order. The Jake Fraser-Mackgark, despite struggling against Pakistan at the beginning of this season and weak performance in BBL until the final match, may be a possible option of Marsh.

Australia’s team already has many batsmen, including additional wicketkeeper Alex Carry and he can choose another all -rounder instead of Marsh. Will Sutherland played ODI cricket last year and would have been on a UK tour in September if he had not suffered a back injury.

Webster has not played ODI cricket, but he can be called when needed, while Cooper Konoli is also a spin-heading all-rounder, although Australia already has four batsmen who can bowl spin. Cameron Green is unavailable as his rehab is going on after back surgery in October.

Cummins also playing in the tournament are also suspicious due to an ankle injury during the Test series against India. In such a situation, Australia will also need a captain due to being out of Marsh. This can be one of Steve Smith, Travis Head and Josh English. Travis Head has captained T20 but has not led the ODI team. English captained both teams in the recent domestic summer. Despite Cummins’ expectation of moving forward in the 2027 ODI World Cup, Australia is eyeing his future leadership options.
