New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of a college in the name of Veer Savarkar in Delhi on Friday. Savarkar College of Delhi University will be built in Roshanpura, Najafgarh. This institute was approved by the Executive Council of Delhi University in 2021. Controversy has started over naming the college after Veer Savarkar. Congress has opposed the college in the name of Savarkar.
Congress has said that BJP does a lot of ribbon cutting politics. It is not important in whose name they are building the institute. In the last 11 years he did not start any scheme in the name of Savarkar. The entire country knows what relationship Savarkar had with the British. Build 50 universities, not just one, children go out to study.
Congress MP Syed Nasir Hussain accused the BJP of ignoring the contributions of freedom fighters and said that by naming a college, a person who had written an apology to the British was being glorified. The Rajya Sabha member told reporters, “Many people lived for the country and made a big contribution in the freedom struggle. BJP is giving legitimacy to those people who had written apology letters to the British and took pension from them.
BJP leader Shehzad Poonawala strongly criticized Congress MP Naseer Hussain’s remarks about Veer Savarkar. He accused the party of repeatedly insulting prominent figures like Savarkar. Poonawalla said, “Insulting great people has become the identity of Congress. Rahul Gandhi has once again insulted Veer Savarkar through one of its MPs Nasir Hussain. Delhi University (DU) has named one of its colleges after Veer Savarkar. And Congress has started opposing it.”
Questioning the Congress’ stand on Savarkar, he asked Hussain, “I ask Nasir Hussain ji whether Indira Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray or Shivraj Singh Chouhan were also wrong, because all of them praised the greatness of Savarkar. Is?”
Congress MP from Punjab, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, on making an institute in the name of Veer Savarkar in Delhi, said that an institute will be made for those who brought amnesty from the British, but who will make an institute for those who brought hanging. Many people from Punjab were also hanged during the freedom movement. Who will create an institute for these people? If we want to make an institute then it should be made of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Lala Lajpat Rai, Sukhdev Singh. I understand that such people sacrificed for the country. An institute should not be made of such people who had come apologizing.
Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa demanded the creation of a world-class School of Economics Institute in the name of former PM Manmohan Singh. He said that the respect that former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh should have received was not given to him. He was the Prime Minister of India for 10 years. We have demanded from the government that School of Economics Institute should be created.
Congress’s student wing National Students Union of India (NSUI) has written a letter to PM Modi urging him to name the proposed new college of Delhi University after former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh instead of Veer Savarkar. In the letter, NSUI national president Varun Chaudhary highlighted Manmohan Singh’s contribution to education and administration and requested that the college honor his legacy.
It is written in the letter, ‘Honorable Prime Minister, you are going to inaugurate a college under Delhi University in the name of Veer Savarkar. NSUI strongly demands that this institute should be named after former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. His recent demise is a great loss and the best way to honor his contribution and legacy would be to dedicate premier educational institutions in his name.
NSUI has said, ‘Manmohan Singh established many institutions like IIT, IIM, AIIMS and introduced the Central Universities Act. Naming institutions after him will inspire generations and honor his transformative vision. The government should take immediate action to recognize his unique contribution to India.
