New Delhi:
Assembly elections in Delhi (Delhi Assembly Elections 2025) are likely to be announced in the first or second week of January. Aam Aadmi Party has announced its candidates on all the seats. Two lists have also been released by the Congress party. Brainstorming is also going on from the Bharatiya Janata Party regarding the names of the candidates. In such a situation, let us know what the data of the last elections tells. In the last 3 elections, which party’s vote share increased and which party lost its ground.
Aam Aadmi Party’s sting in the last three elections
In the last two assembly elections in Delhi, Aam Aadmi Party has performed brilliantly by winning 67 and 62 seats. In the 2013 assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party got 29.5 percent votes, but in the 2015 assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party’s vote share reached 54.3 percent, whereas in the 2020 elections, there was a slight decline in votes but still AAP got 53.6 percent. Record victory by getting vote share.
Big decline in vote share of Congress, BJP saved base
After looking at the vote share, it becomes clear that the increase in the vote share of Aam Aadmi Party is due to the transfer of vote bank of Congress. There has not been much change in the vote share of Bharatiya Janata Party. In the last 4 assembly elections, BJP’s vote share has been between 32 to 38 percent. BJP got the least 32.2 percent votes in 2015 and the highest 38.5 percent votes in 2020.
At the same time, the vote bank of Congress has seen a rapid decline. The Congress party, which got 40.3 percent votes in the 2008 elections, was reduced to just 4.3 percent vote share in the 2020 elections. The Congress party got 24.6 percent votes in 2013, 9.7 percent in 2015 and 4.3 percent in the 2020 elections.
BJP’s dominance in Lok Sabha elections
Bharatiya Janata Party has been dominant in the last three Lok Sabha elections held in Delhi. In all the three Lok Sabha elections of 2014, 2019 and 2024, BJP has won all 7 seats. Aam Aadmi Party and Congress have not even opened their accounts in Delhi. If we talk about vote share, Aam Aadmi Party is far behind BJP in terms of vote share also. While BJP had got 46.4 percent votes in the year 2014, its vote share increased to 56.6 percent in 2019, whereas despite a slight decline in the 2024 elections, BJP’s vote share remained at 54.7 percent.
Congress’s performance has been better in the Lok Sabha than in the Assembly.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Congress Party got 15.2 percent votes in Delhi. While in 2019 the vote share of Congress was 22.5, in 2024 Congress got 19 percent votes. Congress and Aam Aadmi Party had jointly contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. However, both the parties did not get much benefit from it.
