According to the Meteorological Department of India, dense to very dense fog conditions are likely to continue in the Ganga plains during the next 3-4 days. Due to the effect of western disturbance and its interaction with easterly westerly winds, there is a possibility of rain in northwest India during 10 to 12 January.

There is a possibility of light to moderate rain at many places along with thunderstorm at isolated places in the northeastern states on January 8 and 9. There is also a possibility of sporadic hailstorm in Sikkim and North Assam on January 10. Scattered rain with thunder and lightning has been predicted in Sikkim on 11th. Whereas on January 8 to 10, there are chances of rain in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

A fresh western disturbance and easterly winds are likely to affect northwest India by January 10-12. Under its influence, light to moderate rain/snowfall is likely over the western Himalayan region and light rain over the plains of northwest India during the same period.

There may be snowfall in Manali, Shimla, Kufri in Himachal. There are chances of snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir also.

Cold wave continues to wreak havoc in Uttar Pradesh. Orange alert has been issued in many areas of the state regarding cold weather and fog. On Tuesday, some areas were seen wrapped in a blanket of very dense fog. The minimum temperature recorded in the capital Lucknow on Tuesday morning was 11 degrees Celsius. According to IMD, there is likely to be no major change in the maximum temperature during the next 4 days. Except in the central part of the state where there will be no major change during the next 5 days. The Meteorological Department has predicted a gradual drop of 2°C-4°C in the minimum temperature at night.

Dense fog has been visible in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh since Tuesday morning. A dense blanket of fog is spread all around the district and visibility is also around 50 to 100 meters. According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of fog in the district till January 9. Apart from this, there are chances of rain till January 11. During this period, cold winds are also expected to blow at a speed of 4 kilometers per hour.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 6.5 degrees Celsius in Narnaul, Haryana, 10 degrees Celsius in Karnal, 10.4 degrees Celsius in Bhiwani, 11 degrees Celsius in Ambala, 11.6 degrees Celsius in Hisar and 11.8 degrees Celsius in Rohtak. The minimum temperature in Chandigarh, the common capital of both the states, was recorded at 11.6 degrees Celsius.

Qazigund, the gateway to the valley, recorded a minimum temperature of 0.4 degrees Celsius, while Konibal in Pampore town recorded a minimum temperature of minus 0.4 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in North Kashmir’s Kupwara was minus 1.4 degrees Celsius, while in South Kashmir’s Kokernag the minimum temperature was minus 0.5 degrees Celsius.

Kashmir is currently in the grip of severe cold period ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’ which started from December 21. During the 40 day period of ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’, the probability of snowfall is highest and the temperature drops significantly. The period of ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’ will end on January 30.

In many parts of Ooty and surrounding areas including Kantal and Tulaikund, even dew drops froze due to the severe cold. Officials said that there is no possibility of change in the weather for the next few days.
