New Delhi:
Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 10 opposition MPs were suspended for a day from the JPC meeting held on Friday to discuss the matter. After this, the opposition MPs wrote a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla demanding a fair discussion and raised questions on the working methods of the committee chairperson Jagdambika Pal. The MPs have also demanded postponement of the proposed meeting of January 27.
JPC member A. In this letter written on behalf of Raja, Kalyan Banerjee, Asaduddin Owaisi, Naseer Hussain, Arvind Sawant, Gaurav Gogoi, Mohammad Javed, Imran Masood, Mohibullah Nadvi, M. Abdullah, it has been alleged that Jagdambika Pal arbitrarily fixed the dates of the meetings. Have been changing. In the meeting held on Friday, when the opposition MPs included in the committee raised this objection and stood up to present their views, they suspended 10 members of the opposition.
Opposition MPs said that despite their objections, the JPC meeting was first scheduled for January 24 and 25 and on Friday morning it was told that the January 25 meeting would be held on January 27. He said that on the basis of the earlier fixed schedule, the members have decided their programs in their respective areas. He requested to organize this meeting on January 30 so that all the members can present their views as this is an important bill.
This is very regrettable: Mohibullah Nadvi
Mohibullah Nadvi said, “It is very regrettable that whenever someone raises voice in Parliament or Parliament committees to protect the Constitution and democratic values, he is ignored. This is a serious situation, because the Constitution is being ignored.” And instead of this, dictatorship and bulldozer mentality is being promoted, this is an alarm bell for our democratic system. It is a matter of concern for the countrymen.”
The members suspended from JPC include senior MPs from various political parties, who have wide experience. He has been involved in many committees and many of them have also been members of various JPCs in the past. They are well aware of its rules and procedures. However, we have never seen a JPC in which 10 members were suspended simultaneously.
Gaurav Gogoi
Congress MP
Congress MP Imran Masood said, “Parliamentary conventions are not being followed and this bill is completely against the times. It appears to be a conspiracy to grab Waqf properties and through this to spread hatred in the country.” We asked the Speaker why there is such a hurry, when this bill could have been tabled till 4th April. The parties will not get proper time to present their views.”
Waqf Amendment Bill is a very sensitive issue. If the government tries to force it and tries to bring it directly to Parliament through the Joint Working Committee, it will have serious negative consequences, both legal and social. If the government is in a hurry, it will have even worse consequences.
Asaduddin Owaisi
Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad
This is no joke: DMK MP A. King
DMK MP A. Raja said, “Our priority is that every state be taken into equal consideration. The Speaker should directly tell the Chairman that every state gets equal opportunity to make its statement. Only 48 hours to submit amendments It is a hurry to give time, and it is not a joke that we should get enough time for this process and then come here and ensure that the Joint Parliamentary Committee gets enough time to deliberate. Changes are being made to the current program. Even at midnight, which is not right. We appeal to the Speaker to take necessary steps to keep this process fair and transparent.”
