The month of October, the year 1952, place-Lucknow. Pakistan’s cricket team came to India to play Test for the first time. Partition wounds were fresh. Its effect was also in the cricket field. The first match of the 5 Test series was in Delhi. India won in this.
,
In the second match, Pakistan fast bowler Fazal Mahmood changed the story. In front of Fazal, the Indian team was able to score 106 in the first innings and 182 runs in the second innings. Fazal took 5 wickets in the first innings and 7 wickets in the second innings. Pakistan won by innings and 43 runs.
Two years later, in 1954, Fazal gave Pakistan the first win abroad. Tard 12 wickets against England at Oval, London. This was the initial phase of Pakistan’s dreadful fast bowling.
Then from Sarfaraz Nawaz, Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Yunus, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami to Shaheen Shah Afridi, Nasim Shah, Haris Rauf, fast bowlers became the identity of Pakistan cricket.
From India, one batsmen like Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin, Dravid, Sehwag, Virat, Rohit kept coming out, similarly Pakistan got brilliant fast bowlers. Children’s role models were also fast bowlers there.
Dainik Bhaskar’s reporter Bikram Pratap Singh is in Pakistan for coverage of the Champions Trophy. He spoke to former Pakistan cricketer and sports journalist. Asked why there is so much craze for fast bowling in Pakistan, how this country became a nursery of fast bowling, in what condition is this nursery today and is it really the reason for getting a good fast bowler in Pakistan.
We talked to two experts
1. From former Pakistan fast bowler Abdur Rauf, he currently coachs fast bowling in Lahore.
2. From former sports journalist Qamar Ahmed. More than 1000 international cricket matches have been covered for media outlets like Qamar BBC, The Telegraph, The Sun.
Causes for more fast bowlers from Pakistan
1. Youth’s role model fast bowler Abdur Rauf says, ‘Pakistan got the first match in cricket winner fast bowler. The name was Fazal Mahmud. Fazal became Pakistan’s biggest star in the 50s. Sarfaraz Nawaz, who considered Fazal as a role model, became a superstar cricketer in the 70s.
Abdur Rauf further explains, ‘Imran Khan came after Sarfaraz. Along with being a good bowler, he was also a great batsman. Imran became the biggest role model of Pakistan cricket. He changed Pakistan’s cricket. Inspired the entire generation.
Seeing Imran, Wasim came to bowlers like Akram and Waqar Younis. Then Shoaib Akhtar, Abdul Razzaq, Azhar Mahmood came. The new bowler knew that he would get a place in the team only after bowling well with them. Later Mohammad Aamir, Omar Gul, Mohammad Sami, Mohammad Asif took command of fast bowling. In today’s generation, bowlers like Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah are with Pakistan.
Mohammad Bilal, who is practicing in Lahore, says, ‘Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis are my ideals. I have seen Mohammad Aamir playing. Seeing these, he has learned bowling.
2. Tennis Ball Cricket Abdur Rauf says, ‘Tennis ball or tape ball cricket helped a lot in the fast bowlers in Pakistan. The tennis ball is light and in an attempt to accelerate it, the arm speed of the bowlers increases.
‘Tennis ball matches are held on the small ground. There are 10–12 overs matches. The batsmen try to hit six on every ball. So the bowler also devise new skills to protect himself and succeed. Due to this, the yorker and slow ball of Pakistani fast bowlers got better.
Professional cricketer Mohammad explains, ‘Children start playing cricket with tennis balls in Pakistan, especially in Punjab. It takes more body emphasis. You do not have a chance in this. Runnings are made, shots are more. Therefore, the bowlers push. This generates pace. Shoulders are used. ‘
‘Then these boys start playing with leather ball. If there are slight polish, then work on skills, line lengths and seams with pace. Imran Khan similarly prepared Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.
3. Club Cricket Abdur Rauf explains, ‘Young leather balls in Pakistan put their hands in club cricket for the first time. Club cricket has been quite popular in cities like Lahore and Karachi. There is a competition in the clubs of Lahore that more successful fast bowlers will come out of which club. There are also clubs from which they used to play three to four fast bowlers together, which were also part of the Pakistan team.
4. First Class Cricket Rauf says, “Earlier, good performance in first class cricket was necessary to make a place in the Pakistan team or to come to Pakistan camp. Every fast bowler was trying to play more and more first class matches and took 90 or 100 wickets in the season. This also led to consignment of fast bowlers in Pakistan.
Is Pakistan’s bowler more fast than eating meat Why do more fast bowlers come out in Pakistan than in India? Shoaib Akhtar, the world’s fastest bowler, was once asked this question. He replied that there is more culture of meat in Pakistan, so better fast bowlers come out of India here.
However, Rauf considers this theory wrong. He says, ‘It is true that an athlete needs protein in the right number. Still, there is no role of protein after a limit.
Rauf, who has an MPhil from sports science, says, “Pakistan has not got great fast bowlers by eating more meat. This is just misunderstanding. Pakistan got more fast bowlers because from the beginning the role model of children here has been a fast bowler. Just like the role model of children in India has been a batsman. So there were more successful batsmen there.
Now Pakistan’s fast bowling tradition is in trouble Abdur Rauf says, “Even though more than one fast bowler has been coming out of Pakistan, now this tradition is in danger. The structure of club cricket and first class cricket in Pakistan is being destroyed. Only after hard work, a player had selection in the national team. Now playing well in some T20 matches can also work.
‘T20 cricket is popular in Pakistan like the world. Young cricketers now want to play in Pakistan Super League (PSL) instead of the national team. The PCB takes a good player in some matches of PSL to the national team. These bowlers do not have a skill set worth long format. They start struggling soon. ‘
‘No money in first class cricket, so players are keeping distance’ In Pakistan, young bowlers no longer want to play first class cricket. Fast bowler Mohammad Abbas, who has played Test for Pakistan, explains the reason for this. He says, “If a player in India plays 10 Ranji matches, then he earns 75 lakh to 1 crore rupees.”
The fee for a first class match in Pakistan is less than 30 thousand rupees in Pakistani currency. In such a situation, no one wants to play first class cricket. Young fast bowlers also do not prefer it. Due to this, quality fast bowlers in Pakistan are getting reduced.
Expert said- PCB does not mean cricket Pakistan’s Senior Sports Journalist Qamar Ahmed says, ‘Pakistan Cricket Board is a non -professional board. BCCI officials come to India in India. They work responsibly. This is not the case in Pakistan. Those who run the board here do not understand cricket.
Abdur Rauf also blames PCB behind Pakistan’s decline in the quality of fast bowling. He says, ‘Earlier Shaheen and Naseem were 145 km per hour bowler. PCB did not manage his injury properly. Now they throw the ball at a speed of 130 km.
Abdur Rauf says, ‘A bowler named Ihsanullah came out three years ago. He used to get a speed of about 150 kmph. His career deteriorated due to injury. PCB’s medical panel does not have a doctors of the kind and they make the players worse much instead of fixing the injury.

‘India is now far ahead of Pakistan’ In cricket, the Pakistani team had a heavy upper hand on India in the 80s and 90s. According to Rauf, India has now moved far ahead. He says, ‘Professional people in India are handling cricket. The players are taken care of there.
‘First class structure in India is quite good. The National Cricket Academy of BCCI always keeps players physically and mentally fit. Nothing like this is happening in Pakistan. This is the reason why India is going ahead in cricket and Pakistan is lagging behind.
‘Change is coming in India after the arrival of Bumrah. Harshit Rana throws balls at a speed of more than 140. Umran Malik bowling at a speed of 150. There are now 4-5 bowlers in India, which can throw balls at a speed of 140 to 150 consecutives.
