Donald Trump government will start in America from today, will it give tension to India and China about tariffs?

New Delhi:

Donald Trump will take the oath of office today. Even before officially assuming the office of President of America, he has already told his plans for the next four years. This has given people a glimpse of what they are going to do in the coming days. With the arrival of Trump, the fear of starting a tariff war (import duty) once again has become stronger. This is because Trump has warned of imposing tariffs on different countries. The biggest concern in this is about India and China. Let us see how the relations can be for these countries in the next four years under the Trump government.

How will Trump deal with China?

Trump’s primary challenge will be to deal with China because its rise will be the biggest challenge to American interests and its power in a unipolar world. Therefore he has already appealed to counter Chinese moves in the Panama Canal and the Arctic. Keeping this in mind, he has said that America should take back the Panama Canal and buy Greenland. The aim of their tariff policy is to create a rational trade system. Their technological sanctions on China aim to prevent its rise as a challenger to America’s supremacy in the region. Trump would like to stop China’s aggression in Taiwan and its incursions into the East and South China Sea.

Donald Trump has warned of imposing tariffs of more than 60 percent on Chinese products.

To counter China, Trump will have to bring stability in West Asia and pave the way for an agreement in Ukraine that will be acceptable to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump had promised during the election campaign that up to 60 percent tariff would be imposed on Chinese products. Trump also pursues tariff war politics against India. For a long time, he has been raising questions about the tax imposed in India on the products of American bike manufacturing company Harley Davidson. For this, he has been advocating imposing heavy tariffs on Indian products.

Will BRICS be able to bring its currency against the dollar?

Last year, in the BRICS summit held in Kazan, Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin had insisted on trade in their respective currencies from the member countries of the organization. This was seen as the first step towards BRICS creating its own currency. Whereas at present the US dollar is considered the intermediate currency all over the world. From the year 2023 itself, it is expected that BRICS will emphasize on the use of its own currency as an alternative to the US dollar. Trump has also taken this news seriously. He has threatened to impose 100 percent tariff on the countries included in BRICS. Apart from Russia, India and China are also members of BRICS. India and China are two rapidly growing economies in the world.

What do America and India need from each other?

Trump has so far given less priority to India. He says that he sees the relationship as a give and take. What can India give to America and what should it get from America? Opening the Indian market to American goods and investors is an easy way to please Trump. Now it depends on India how much it opens its market to American companies.

The world’s richest person, Elon Musk, is currently one of Trump’s closest friends. Musk would like to launch Starlink and his driverless Tesla car in India. The concern here for India is that if it allows Starlink, it could cause trouble for Indian telecom companies. India needs a lot from America. He needs Trump’s support to strengthen his hold in Bangladesh. India will also have to realize that its relationship with Russia does not come at the cost of its relationship with America. India also needs Trump administration’s help for a permanent seat in the Security Council. But for all this we may have to wait for a few months.
