Some officers and crew of a French nuclear submarine inadvertently revealed their patrol schedules on the popular app Strava. Actually Strava is a fitness app. On this app, the officers and crew associated with the submarine accidentally disclosed information about their fitness activities. This app has a feature to upload the data to the map along with the exact location of where the user completed his exercise or achieved his fitness goal. On this feature the crew shared sensitive information about their location and time.

There are reportedly four French nuclear submarines based at this base, each with 16 nuclear missiles. Their explosive intensity is approximately a thousand times more powerful than the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Of the four nuclear submarines, nicknamed the ‘Black Boats’, at least one has been on regular patrol since 1972. The base is home to approximately 2,000 military personnel and is a top secret military area of ​​France.

How did this mistake happen?

This base is a safe place like a fort. Where land and sea are continuously monitored by 24-hour camera surveillance and drones. Even mobile phones are banned in this area. Phones are switched off and placed in signal-proof locker facilities, which are available at check points throughout the base. Despite such heavy security arrangements, sensitive information got leaked due to smartwatches with third-party applications.

450 activated on French Army app

According to a report in Britain’s Daily Mail, the investigation conducted after the leak revealed that over the past ten years, more than 450 Strava users (all French military) have been active in the secret nuclear base. According to a report by French newspaper Le Monde, journalists found that many military personnel made their real identities public on the fitness app. Apart from this, he also kept his profile public.

In one case, an officer uploaded his information to a fitness app while jogging along the dock. This happened in January and February of 2023. The official recorded these races on 16 occasions on different dates. On February 3, 2023, he also recorded his timing and location on the app. Then he didn’t use Strava for more than a month. But on March 25, his activities on the app started again.

According to Le Monde’s Stravalix investigation, the bodyguards of the French, American and Russian presidents also use the Strava fitness app. In such a situation, the movements and travels of the Presidents can be predicted and monitored through the Strava accounts of the bodyguards.
