Ear pain can occur in any season, but why does it happen that it increases in winter and how correct are the remedies we adopt without medical consultation to avoid it? Know the answers to all these questions
I remember it well. In my childhood, I used to have severe ear pain while sleeping in the village. Grandma used to put oil in the ears. I too used to sleep with both the pain and the belief that Grandma’s oil would prove to be a pain killer. However, as time passed and I grew up, I realized that this was a myth. Doctors do not like putting oil in the ears at all. It was then that I noticed that this often happened only in winter (Ear pain in winter).
I told my personal story because today we are going to answer the same question that why ear pain increases in winter and why it is wrong to put oil in the ear or anything else without medical consultation. .
We talked to Dr. Anoop Raj, an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist (ENT Specialist) and currently working at Max Hospital Noida, to know the causes of ear pain, especially in winter, and he told us some reasons.
According to the doctor, there are many factors and causes of ear pain, but cold in winter is a major reason due to which people suffer from ear pain.

What are the common causes of ear pain in winter?
1. Congestion
Actually, there is a Eustachian tube in our head which connects the upper part of the throat and the ear. Its function is to prevent excess air pressure and any type of fluid from reaching the ear. When you have a cold, the fluid in your nose blocks the Eustachian tube. Due to blockage of this tube, you get ear pain in winter and sometimes your ears start flowing.
Sometimes ear pain can go away as soon as your cold gets cured and sometimes it can also cause many other infections.
2. Middle Ear Infection
This infection is also a common cause of ear pain in winter. This infection occurs when cold viruses pass through your nose and throat and reach your ears through the same Eustachian tube (the tube that connects the ear to the upper part of the throat). These viruses then create fluid in your internal parts.
Through the fluid, bacteria are born and after that, pain in the ear may start but along with it, problems like swelling in the ear, difficulty in hearing and ear discharge can also occur. You may even have to struggle with fever.
3. Sinus Infection
This is a step up from middle ear infection, which can cause ear pain. This happens when your cold lasts for several days. After this infection, there may be pain in your ears along with pressure. This means that more fluid from your nose and throat has reached your ears. After this, you may also have problems like ear pain in winter, ear discharge, shortness of breath and toothache.
