The Central Government has told the Supreme Court that the scope of Halal certificate has extended beyond meat to building materials like rebar and cement. The Central Government has told that many agencies have made lakhs and crores of rupees in the name of giving Halal certificate.
The Central Government has given these arguments in the case of petitions filed in the Supreme Court against the Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh. Yogi government had banned the sale of products with Halal certificate in Uttar Pradesh in 2023. Some organizations had reached the Supreme Court against this.
Flour and gram flour are also halal
The Supreme Court has cases The petitions filed against the decision of the UP government were heard on Monday (January 25, 2025). During this, Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta appeared on behalf of the Center to file a reply in the Halal case. He told that Halal certificate was affixed on rebar, cement and even gram flour.
SG Tushar Mehta Said“As far as Halal meat is concerned, no one can have any objection to it. But the court will be surprised, as I was yesterday, that even cement has to be Halal-certified. It is also necessary for the reed to be Halal-certified. “Even water needs to be halal-certified.”
SG Tushar Mehta said that it was mandatory for even gram flour and flour to be Halal certified. He raised the question what is the need for this. SG Mehta said that many agencies have made lakhs of crores of rupees in this Halal certificate business.
Halal label increasing the price
SG Mehta in Supreme Court told That due to Halal, many products are being sold at expensive prices because a fee has to be paid for getting the Halal stamp. He raised the question why non-Muslim people who do not want to eat Halal should be forced to buy expensive products.
The Supreme Court has now postponed the hearing of this case till March. The Supreme Court has also asked to give a copy of the reply filed by the Center in this case to the organizations that have come to save Halal. In this case, the court had already banned these agencies from taking action.
Yogi government had imposed a ban
It is noteworthy that the Uttar Pradesh government had banned Halal certified products in the state in November 2023. The UP government had decided that a complete ban should be imposed on the production, distribution and storage of Halal products within the state limits. An official order was also issued for this.
The Uttar Pradesh government had said that Halal certificate is not related to the quality of any product. Such marks only create confusion regarding quality. The products on which such restrictions have been imposed were clearly mentioned in the letter issued by the state government. After Halal certified products were banned in UP, Halal Trust had approached the court.
