Education report: In 2018-19, out of 94.3 lakh teachers in the school teaching workforce, 47.16 lakh (50.01 per cent) were male and 47.14 lakh (49.98 per cent) were female. By 2023-24, the number of female teachers has increased to 52 lakh, while the number of male teachers has decreased to about 45 lakh. This change in data clearly shows that women achieved more than 50 percent representation in 2019-20 and there has been a steady increase every year thereafter. The most significant increase was seen in 2022-23 and 2023-24, when the share of women teachers increased from 51.3 percent to 53.3 percent.
Increased contribution in private schools
Most of the increase in the number of female school teachers has come from private schools. The number of women teachers in private schools increased by 20 percent between 2018-19 to 2023-24. At the same time, the number of women teachers in government schools increased by only 6 percent during this period.

Women dominate in these states
In some states, the number of female teachers in government schools is more than that of males. 78 percent of government school teachers in Kerala are women. High representation of women teachers has also been seen in Tamil Nadu at 67 percent, Punjab at 64 percent and Delhi at 61 percent.
There are adverse conditions in higher education
However, this progress is limited to school education only. Men still dominate higher education. According to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) report of 2021-22, the percentage of female teachers is only 43, while the percentage of male teachers is 57.
