In the road accident, the injured will get free treatment of up to Rs 1.5 lakh from March 2025 this month i.e. from March 2025. This rule will also be mandatory for private hospitals. This system will be implemented across the country. NHAI will serve as a nodal agency for this.
According to the National Highway Authority (NHAI) official, Section 162 of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 has already been amended for the scheme. Pilot projects were run in six states including Puducherry, Assam, Haryana and Punjab in the last 5 months before the scheme was fully implemented, which was successful.
The NHAI officer said that as soon as the police or any common citizen or institution will reach the hospital, his treatment will start immediately. No fees will have to be deposited for this. Whether or not the family is with the injured, the hospital will look after him. Both private and government hospitals will have to provide cashless treatment.

After this, on 7 January 2025, Gadkari announced the launch of the scheme official across the country. With this, if there is a road accident anywhere in the country, the injured person will be given a maximum of Rs 1.5 lakh from the Government of India for treatment. So that he will be able to get treatment in the hospital for 7 days.

After cashless treatment up to one and a half lakhs, NHAI will work as a nodal agency in its payment, that is, after treatment, the patient or their family do not have to pay up to one and a half lakhs.
If the treatment costs more than one and a half lakhs, then the increased bill will have to be filled by the patient or family. Sources say that efforts are being made that the amount of one and a half lakhs can be increased to Rs 2 lakh.
Actually, an hour after the accident is called ‘Golden Hour’. During this time, many deaths occur due to lack of treatment. This scheme is being started to reduce this.
The death toll due to not getting timely treatment In India, about 1.5 million people were killed in road accidents in 2023. In 2024, 1.2 lakh lives were lost between January-October. 30-40% people die due to lack of timely treatment.
At the same time, the treatment of the injured of the road accident costs an average of 50,000 to 2 lakh rupees. In serious cases, the expenditure reaches 5-10 lakhs. The scheme of free treatment up to Rs 1.5 lakh is expected to cost about 10 thousand crores every year.
