Change of power. Fire of revenge. Another round of violence… The land of Syria is again being stained with blood. With the blood of our own citizens. At least 973 citizens have been killed between March 6 and March 10. A special minority community, Alavi, is being targeted. Who was also accused of these murders? Security personnel and pro -government fighters themselves.
The question is why the army of a country is killing its own citizens? How are these murders associated with the ruling there? After all, why does the new government of Syria look bent on the elimination of Alavi minorities? Will tell you all this in this Excellener. In the first point, you tell you the updates related to it.
- Syrian Observatory for Human Rights War Monitor said that between March 6 and March 10, the coastal communities where Alavi minority communities live in the coastal area, security personnel or pro -government fighters have killed 973 citizens in “ethnic cleaning campaigns”. 231 members of security forces and 250 Assad fighters have also been killed in the fight.
- The head of the UN Rights Volcar Turk has said that these murders should “stop immediately”. The Arab League, the United Nations, the United States, the UK and other governments have condemned the violence.
- Amid criticisms, the new Syrian leader Ahmed al-Shara has vowed to decide the accountability of the mass murders of Alavi citizens and conduct an inquiry.
Why is violence happening in Syria?
Since 1971, there was a control of the Al-Assad family in Syria, which ended in December 2024. Ahmed al-Shara has formed an interim government by removing Bashar al-Assad from power. Many people in Syria believe that even though Sunni is majority there, power and resources were concentrated in the hands of minority communities- Alavi in these 5 decades. The al-Assad family comes from this community.
In December 2024, there was a ruling in Syria and Bashar al-Assad had to leave Syria and flee. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an Islamic group led by Ahmed al-Shara, has uprooted Assad from power. The roots of this group are in the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda. It has still been listed as a terrorist organization by the US and many Western governments.
Now the loyal fighters of Bashar al-Assad are competing with the security personnel of the new government and the fighters of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. Security personnel and fighters of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham have targeted areas where people from Alavi community live. The bloodshed is getting unaware and the Alavi community has been affected the most.

Alavi is a religious minority in Syria. Their share is about 12 percent of the total population of Syria. This community, which came out of Shia Islam, has different beliefs and customs. Historically, Alavi has been concentrated in the coastal areas of Syria, especially in Latakia and Tartus provinces.
Why is the Alavi community being targeted?
The Assad family is associated with the Alavi community. During the 5 decade of this family rule, people of Alavi community captured important positions in the army and government. It was seen as the occupation of minorities.
According to the AFP report, 67 -year -old Sameer Haider, who came from the city of Southern Syria, Baniyas, described the bloody scene. According to him, the group entered and killed people’s homes. It also included two of his brothers and nephews. He said that the killers were “foreigners”. Hyder said, “They gathered all the people on the roof and fired on them.”
